Eno more or less stumbled upon ambient music back in 1975, when Discreet Music effectively recorded itself. With Music for Airports, the conditions were laid down for music that attracts attention just because its happening; colouring silence so that you find yourself listening simply by being in the same space. Portable music though this is, its far better than disposable, so a realisation for instruments makes sense. This has been carried out here with unobtrusive skill by members of Bang-on-a-Can, retaining the music's essence--neutral planes of sound emerging from and receding into silence, which gentle splashes of colour wrap in an attractive aural haze. It's ensemble music-making of real concentration and sensitivity. Don't throw out your copy of the original (Virgin), especially since Robert Wyatt's piano contribution on that disc redefines meaningful understatement, but do invest in this disc. Play it to friends after dinner, and watch the reaction as they realise they're not alone! --Richard Whitehouse
