   61年にニューヨークのジャズ・クラブ「ヴィレッジ・ヴァンガード」でライブ録音された22曲のうち、以前『ヴィレッジ・ヴァンガードのジョン・コルトレーン』『インプレッションズ』に収録されていた5曲を収めた1枚だ。
   コルトレーンは、テナー・サックスとソプラノ・サックスを半々に吹いている。他のメンバーはエリック・ドルフィー（バス・クラリネット）、マッコイ・タイナー（ピアノ）、ジミー・ギャリソン（ベース）、レジー・ワークマン（ベース）、エルヴィン・ジョーンズ（ドラムス）。ジャズのほの甘い側面を削ぎ落とし、超辛口な表現を追求している。
   なお、全22曲を収めた『コンプリート1961ヴィレッジ・ヴァンガード・レコーディングス』も4枚組で発売されており、このセッションの全容を知ることができる。（松本泰樹）

コルトレーンのソプラノが炸裂し、躍動感に満ちたアツアツの「朝日のようにさわやかに」。次第に演奏に熱がこもって来るにつれて、コルトレーンのテナーの音が、かすれてきたり割れてきたりと激しくなっていく様が、とてもスポンティニアスで最高の「チェイシン・ザ・トレーン」。ジミー・ギャリソンのベースが、上へ下へと大活躍し、コルトレーンのサックスと一体となって音楽をひたすら前進させていく様子が感動的な「インプレッションズ」など、もう言うこと無しの全５曲！

１９６１年のヴィレッヂ・ヴァンガードでのライブはコンプリートboxの方が大コルトレーンファンの僕としては好きですが、そこまででは無いと言う人にはこちらの方が正にオイシイとこ取りの様な内容で手軽に楽しめて良いと思います。演奏も一番まとまっており、CDを再生した途端当時のムードがビシビシ伝わって一気に60年代にタイムスリップ出来ます。特に1曲目と2曲目はお気に入りで2曲目のsoftli,as in a morning sunriseは僕の知る限りこの時の録音でしか記録が無い様で貴重だと思います。

1961年11月2日(2・3)、3日(1)ヴィレッジ・ヴァンガードでのライヴ録音。
マックス・ゴードンが経営する『ヴィレッジ・ヴァンガード』は数々の名盤を残してきたライヴのメッカとも言うべき場所である。検索で『ヴィレッジ・ヴァンガード』と入れれば数多くの有名作がずらりと並ぶ。
J・Cトーマス著『コルトレーンの生涯』にはこの夜の店内の様子が見事に描かれている。

クラブ・オーナーのマックス・ゴードンはいつの間にか後方のテーブルに腰を下ろし、音楽を聴きながら頭をうなずくように振っている。アドリブがクライマックスに達すると、今にも折れそうなくらい首を振り、コルトレーンが死ぬまでずっとコンビを組み続けたプロデューサー、ボブ・シールは激しく床を踏みならすとともに煙幕のようにパイプをふかし続けていた。そして、録音技師ルディ・ヴァン・ゲルダーはマイクをテナーから数インチの位置に支えながら、動き回って吹くコルトレーンを追いかけていた。そのため客の足を踏んだり、乗り越えたりするはめになった。

このアルバムの3曲目『チェイシン・ザ・トレーン』はそうしたルディ・ヴァン・ゲルダーがコルトレーンを追いかける様を曲名にしたものである。当時のライヴ録音の有り様もうかがい知れて、なおさら面白い。
