Livingston Taylor will forever be James Taylor's younger brother, and that's too bad. It keeps him from being recognized as the talent he is in his own right--and he's a lot more entertaining in my book than that insidious, insipid James.
Carolina Day is a fine sampling of Livingston's laid-back, sweetly melodic music, from his earliest Jon Landau-produced work to his brief late-'70s chart run. Throughout the album, his subtle, honey-tinged voice decorates sharp tunes like "I'll Come Running" and "Get Out of Bed." One grumpy caveat, though: It's a shame that Taylor's best song, the lovely "In My Reply" from his self-titled debut, is not included here.
