最近のミシェル・ブランチとの共演曲などを聴いていると、「やたらギターの上手いおっちゃん」ぐらいにしか思われないだろうが、初期四作ほどでは、かなり野蛮なプレイをしていて、そんな印象を、一瞬で吹き飛ばす。個人的には、映画「ウッドストック」で演奏されている「ソウル・サクリファイス」の衝撃が凄すぎて、思わず三枚ほどまとめ買いしてしまった。「サンタナ」「キャラバンサライ」と共に購入したその中で、本作を、最も愛聴している。タイトルだけで、人一人くらいは殺せそうな1、フリートウッド・マックとガボール・ザボを高次元で融合させた、そのセンスが凄い2などなど。やたらパーカッションが気持ちよい3は、邦題だけ何とかして欲しい。ボーナス・トラックも当時のライヴ音源で、こういうのなら大歓迎。

ウッドストックの映画で強烈な印象を与えて、ファーストアルバムもそこそこの評価で登場してきたサンタナがその存在をロック史に記すことになった記念的超名作。まずアルバムジャケット、１枚目も隠し絵ありの楽しめるものでしたが、この2枚目においては強烈な印象を与えるもう禁断の・・・というところでしょうか。マイルス・デイビスのビッチェス・ブリューと同じ画家だと思うのですがいい出来です。そして極めつけはフリートウッド・マックの「ブラック・マジック・ウーマン」、まさに名手ピーター・グリーンも真っ青。この曲はこのあと様々なライブに出てきますが、ボーカルはこの時のが一番好きですね。いまにし思えば、何故「ブラック・マジック・ウーマン」だったのでしょうか当時でいえば多分２年位前のイギリスのヒット曲のはずですよね。全体的にもこのブラック・マジック・ウーマン以降、ジプシー・クイーンからオエ・コモ・バさらにネシャブールの出来事へと怒涛のごとく突っ走ります。まさに勢いがついてしまってどうしようもない時代を作った衝撃のアルバムです。ボーナストラックも嬉しいです。

ウッドストック世代にとって忘れられないインパクトを画面から発散させていた当時のサンタナはまさに「ドラッグ」「酒・女」的な不良な臭いがプンプンしていた魅力的なバンドでした。当時、これがロック？と言う評論家も沢山いたが、充分にロックいやそんな範疇をあっさり越えたバンドだった。その魅力はラテンパーカッションとマイク・シュリーブのリズム隊の織りなすリズムのうねり、サンタナのエモーショナルなギター、決してウマくなかったが味のあるボーカルetc.その全てが一体化した怪しいサウンドこそ「サンタナ」の魅力だったと思います。名曲「ソウル・サクリファイス」が入ったファースト。大ヒット曲「ブラック・マジックウーマン」など捨て曲なしの、このセカンド。ニール・ショーンとのギターバトルが戦慄を憶えたサードアルバム。孤高のトータルサウンドが美しい「キャラバン・サライ」この4枚が「サンタナ」のベストだと思う。その中でも、このセカンドがアルバムの構成・完成度からサンタナのベストアルバムと言っても過言でな無い！今のサンタナは、私的には別バンドです。電気を消した真っ黒な部屋で１曲目の「風は歌い,野獣は叫ぶ」を聞いてみて欲しい。そのパーカッションの美しさに絡むサンタナのギターのエロチックな叫び。ここで日常から遊離出来ます！後はめくるめく官能なサウンドの渦に巻き込まれます。これこそコンセプトアルバムです。おまけのライブテイクも暑いです！それと忘れてならないのはアルバムジャケットの美しい怪しさです。見事にサウンドを表現しています。
