From the ashes of South California popcore progenitors the Descendents, all feature the band's legendary drummer/songwriter Bill Stevenson who also enjoyed a prolonged stint in the stool with Black Flag. While remaining little more of a cult act, The Descendents' pounding cohesion of high-octane hardcore and harmonic pop classicism was latterly duplicated with world-beating results by Green Day. When the band's vocalist Milo Aukerman walked out in 1987, they became All, and blistered on in much the same vein with Chad Price behind the microphone. Mass Nerder, meanwhile, is a superbly honed, state-of-the-art example of thrashing, Southern California punk perfection. Precision intricacies proliferate, priceless harmonies pepper each and every song, and veteran percussionist Stevenson has never sounded more vital. From the anti-slacker tirade of "World's On Heroin" to the post-romantic disgust of "Silence", Mass Nerder (which, incidentally, features a number of vocal cameos from erstwhile absentee, Aukerman) is aural adrenaline incarnate. --Ian Fortnam
