アメイジンググレイスをロッドの曲だとずっと思い込んでいた私ですが、本当に一小節だけ歌われており、これが実に印象深く、ここを聞くためにレコードの針を途中で落とすという極めて危険な聞き方をした思い出があります。どこで聞けるか？クレジットには書かれてませんので聞いてのお楽しみ。前置きはさておき、ロッドの名前を世界中に知らしめることになった名作中の名作です。ロッカーという印象が強いロッドですが、彼のボーカルの真骨頂はこのアルバムに満載されておりまして、ここに彼の持ち味の全てが凝縮されております。ブリティッシュ・トラッドあり、ロックンロールあり、フォークソングあり、いい曲なら何でもロッドの世界にして歌いこなしてしまうという姿が既に表れております。このアルバムからオリジナルを聞いた方々も多いと思います。ボブ・ディラン、ティム・ハーディン等々、そして、自作の「マギー・メイ」がなんといっても秀逸、素晴らしいです。このアルバム以降、沢山の名作を出したロッドですが、ある意味で彼のスターになっていく原点であります。そして今でも色褪せない名盤です。

　ロッドスチュワート１９７１年発表の美しき名作｡長らく廃盤で､一時期は探しまくっていました｡手に入れたのはCDになってからで、ようやく「マギーメイ」を収録したオリジナルアルバムを聴くことができたと喜んだことを覚えています｡
　収録されている曲全てが名曲と言える素晴らしいものですが、中でも「Mandolin Wind」は格別｡マンドリンの美しい音色をバックにロッドがこれ以上ない程切なくはかないヴォーカルを聴かせます｡妻と出会った頃､この曲を聴いて彼女がすごく感動してくれたことを思いだします｡
　以来、２０年以上に渡り愛聴し続けている名盤｡あまり取り上げられることの少ないアルバムですが、今の若い世代の人にも是非聴いてもらいたい素敵な作品です。前作「ガソリンアレイ」も本作に劣らずの名作｡２枚合わせてどうぞ。

アメリカに渡ってからの、うさん臭いR&Bシンガーのロッドとは全く別人に聞こえるほど、音楽に真摯に取り組んだ姿勢がにじみ出る一大傑作。中でも大ヒット曲5の出来は最高です。もうえらい昔になりますが、この曲がビルボードチャートの１位に輝いた時、歌手というのは必ずしも美声でなくてはいいんだという単純な真理に初めて気がつきました。

根っからの派手好き、根っからのお調子者がゆえに、この路線には留まっていられなかったんでしょうね、、。このままトラッドフォークの路線を貫いていれば、ひょっとするとヴァン・モリソンあたりと比肩されるようなシンガーになっていたかもしれないと思うと、残念です。このアルバム以降、何枚かハイレベルなアルバムを発表してるので、それで満足すべきな!のかもしれません、、。
