Here are two sides of Bart&ocute;k --the composer donning nationalist costume with works based on traditional dances and songs of Hungary, Romania and Transylvania--and one of his most scorching orchestral showpieces, the ballet score, The Miraculous Mandarin. In the songs and dances Bart&ocute;k turns folk music into high art without losing any of its authentic tang, ranging from the rumbustious (the last of the Dances of Transylvania) to the poignant (the "Melody" from the Hungarian Sketches). And in the complete recording of Mandarin (there's also a suite, which is often recorded, though if you opt for this you miss some of the best bits), Iv´n Fischer and his orchestra take you on a rollercoaster ride through the thrills and spills of one of Bart&ocute;k's greatest works, a compelling tale of seduction, squalor, violence and death, depicted here in unflinching Technicolor. --Harriet Smith
