The debut solo album from late-come
Wu-Tang Clan member, Brooklyn rapper Killah Priest, differs from those of his fellow members in several important respects. One: no
RZA production (hence complex rhymes, simple beats). Two: he takes the sword-n-sorcery motif of
Genius/GZA's seminal
Liquid Swords to its next logical level--pulling in metaphysical quotes from the
Book Of Revelations, conspiracy theories and mystical science fiction imagery in abundance. Three: his jump-cut rapping style is much more laidback, understated and altogether more thoughtful than that of
Ol' Dirty Bastard and
Ghostface (say). Otherwise, it's business as usual--the Wu-Tang's sophisticated rap soundscapes stretched even further out via off-beat unpredictable symbolism, orchestral loops and inspired samples. Stand-outs include the Genius/GZA collaboration, the dark "Cross My Heart" and the arcane "Tai Chi".
