British prog-rock group Yes' founder & bassist Chris Squire's lone solo effort. 'Fish Out of Water', released in 1975, features fellow Yes-man Bill Bruford on drums & percussion. This recording effectively demonstrates just how much Squire contributes to Yes' signature sound. 'Fish...' found a big audience on American FM radio and was a college favorite with tunes like 'Hold Out Your Hand', 'You By My Side' & three more.

Chris Squireの面目躍如の大傑作。この時期に次々と発表されたYesのメンバーのソロ・アルバムの中では一番好きです。うなるChris Squireのリッケンバッカーとドラマティックなオーケストラ。メル・コリンズのサックス。ベーシスト必聴盤。

サウンドはイエスそのものだがギターレス、ボーカルはどこかで聞いたことがあるようで実はアンダーソンではない、スクワイア先生の不思議なファーストソロアルバム。しかしこれによっていくつかの疑問が解消されたので、あくまで私的見解だが紹介してみたい。

1イエスにおける「危機」直後の脱退劇によるブラッフォードとの不仲説。このアルバムでは共にプレイしているのでありえないはず。
2「ドラマ」におけるトレヴァーホーンの必要性。このアルバムを聞く限りスクワイアがアンダーソンの代わりにボーカルを張っても不思議では無いくらい違和感が無い。（例えるなら「幻惑の~」後のフィルズジェネシスのような感じ）。しかしスクワイアがボーカルを張ってしまうと、じゃあLIVEでは誰がハーモニーをつけるのか？という問題が浮上する。ただでさえハイトーンのイエスサウンドなのに、さらに高音のハーモニーをあんな複雑なベースを弾きながら歌うことができるのはスクワイアだけだろう、やはり偉い！
3この時期メンバーがこぞってソロを出したが、イエスに聞き違うほどの仕上がりをみせたのはスクワイアだけである。このアルバムは「リレイヤー」と変わらないほどのハイテンションなのだ。イエスの核は誰かということで諸説様々喧々諤々あるが、歌詞以外はイエスはやはりスクワイアと確信してしまった（別にどーでもいいことなのだが・・・。また後に彼を除く4人（アンダーソン・ブラッフォード・ウェイクマン・ハウ）が集って「閃光」を出したときもイエスを名乗らせなかった点はさすがである。）

中心メンバーは私の好きなメンバーばかり（ビルブラッフォード、パトリックモラーツ、メルコリンズ）にキャラバンのメンバーでもあったジミヘイスティングがフルートで大活躍している。プログレ界の大御所たちもこぞって参加しており大変すばらしいアルバムです。この時期のソロならアンダーソンよりも先にこちらを買いましょう。必ず損はしません。

　「リレイヤー」発表後にイエスのメンバー全員がソロアルバムをリリースしたが、ジョンやハウ以上に聞き応えのあるアルバムを発表したのがクリスだった。この人の書く曲はジョンほど難解ではなく、ハウほどテクニックにおぼれることなく、万人受けをするポップな曲を書くのが非常に上手い人だと思う。「フィッシュ」のイメージしかない人々にとっては意外なアルバムだったに違いない。ビルブラッフォードやメルコリンズが参加し、クリムゾンにも通じるジャケット色のような黒い緊張感が曲に漂い、スリリングなインプロゼーションを聞かせるパートもある。イエスの「リレーヤー」以上の傑作と言っても言い過ぎではないかも、
