The Housemartins, the Mid to Late-Eighties Brit Jangle-Pop Band, Featured Norman Cook (A.k.a. Fatboy Slim) on Bass and the Beautiful South's Paul Heaton on Vocals. This 1988 Release is a Collection of B-Sides, Rare Cover Tracks and Other Miscellaneous Odds and Ends. Includes a Version of Carole King's 'You've Got a Friend', 'Caravan of Love' (Originally Performed by the Isley Brothers), 'Happy Hour', 'SHEEP', 'People who Grinned Themselves to Death' and Much More.

88年に発売のハウスマーティンズのベストです。全24曲で、オリジナルアルバム2枚にシングル曲や未発表曲を織り交ぜた内容で、バンドの概要を知るには充分の内容になっています。

よくネオアコバンドとして、紹介されることが多いですが、確かにアコースティックのサウンドではあるけれども、もっと古風な香りのするフォーク･ロック的な要素も強いです。少なくともグラスゴー系の音とは明らかに違っています。主幹のポール･ヒートンは工業都市シェフィールドの出身ということで、労働者の乾いた感じが滲み出ているような気がするのは、邪推かもしれませんが、明るい曲調でも、どこか哀愁があります。
実際、歌詞のほうは、ポリティカルな内容で、権力に対する弱者の憤りをかなりアイロニカルな手法で描いています。この方法は、後にポール･ヒートンが結成し、イギリスの国民的バンドとなったビューティフル･サウスにも受け継がれています。音のほうは、かなり洗練されていきましたが、ポールの熱い主張は、初期から一貫しています。

それとこのバンドにはもう一人、後にビーツ･インターナショナルやファットボーイ・スリムをやるMR.ビッグビートことノーマン･クックも在籍していました。こちらのほうは、その片鱗はあまり見えてきませんが、ノーマンのスタートがここだったという事実は、興味深いことのように思えます。
そういった意味でも、このベスト盤は、選曲も良いし聴いておいて損はないと思います。

初めて聴いたのはもう１５年ほども前になります。
当時ラジオから流れて来たCaravan of Loveを聞いた瞬間、何とも言えない幸せに包まれました。
何というアーティストなのかも分からず、当時は必死で探したのを覚えています。この曲がカバーだと知ったのもずいぶん後になってから知りました。
オリジナルのIsley Jasper Isleyも買って聴きましたが、やっぱりオリジナルよりHousemartinsの「乾いた」歌声が好きです。
たくさんの方々に聴いて欲しいです。
