　Ritchieの信者にとっては本当に憎たらしいアルバムかもしれない。しかしグレン信者の僕としてはMachine Headよりもこのアルバムをベストだと思っている。1が彼ららしいHard　Rockなのは周知の事実だが、3なんかはDPぽくはないが泣きのバラードであり彼らの音楽の幅を広げることに成功したといえないだろうか。たしかにこのアルバムはHR/HMではないがRockの名盤であることは誰も否定できないと信じている。当時のライブではへたくそだったCoverdaleも9などでは存在感を感じる。Riｔchieが愛想尽かさないでもう少し在籍していてくれたらCoverdale/Hughesのダブルボーカルをもっともっと活かしたDPが誕生していたかもしれないと思う。少なくても今のラインナップよりはDPの名前に泥を塗ることはなかっただろう。そう考えるとちょっと惜しいような気がする。

リッチー信者の端くれである私にとって本作はこれまで、「リッチーをパープル脱退に追いやった元凶」という認識でしかなかったんです。しかし先日のHughes Turner Projectのliveに参戦し、Glenn Hughesの、ものすごい歌唱力にぶっ飛び、改めて聞いてみようという気になり購入とあいなりました。いやあ良いではないか！！さすがに「you can't do it right」での山下達郎が弾きそうなcutting guitarには笑っちゃいました、いやホントに。リッチー、よくこんなの弾いてくれましたねえ。こんなことやらされたんで頭に来てDP辞めちゃったのかな、なんて思っちゃいました。その分？「Lady Double Dealer」では弾きまくりです。「High Ball Shooter」ではJohn LordのKeyが大活躍！！最後はデビカバがしっとり「Soldier of Fortune」で〆てくれます。幅広い音楽性にとても上手い2人のVocals。ひと粒で2度いや3度、4度と美味しい作品です。しかし歌が上手いってのはすごいことですねえ。これ聞いた後「The battle rages on」聞いたら悲しくてなんだか阿呆らしくなりますもん。

「BURN」の大成功の後に引き続き発表された第３期DPの最後のスタジオアルバムです。メンバーはリッチー・ブラックモア（ギター）、ジョン・ロード（オルガン）、イアン・ペイス（ドラム）、デヴィッド・カヴァーデイル（ボーカル）、グレン・ヒューズ（ベース）。ご存知のようにブラックモアはメンバーとの音楽観の相違から、このアルバムを最後に脱退してしまいます。

ジョン・ロードは当初、ジャズとクラシックとロックを融合した作品にしようと構想を温めていたそうですが、スティーヴィー・ワンダー好きのファンキー志向のグレン・ヒューズとマーヴィン・ゲイをリスペクトするというソウル音楽好きのデヴィッド・カヴァーデイルの若い2人の勢いに負けて、結果として「黒人音楽は好きだけどファンキー音楽は嫌い」という偏屈者・ブラックモアの脱退という事態を招いてしまいます。そんな背景を頭に入れながら、この作品を聴くと「確かにリッチー脱退も仕方ないか」と納得せざるを得ません。

賛否両論がどうしても多いこの作品ですが、それでも「嵐の使者」「嵐の女」という素晴らしい名曲を聴かせてくれます。個人的にはブラックな魅力が一杯の６曲目「You Can't Do It Right」もお気に入りです。あとは残念ながら「DPらしさ」という点では特筆できる曲が見当たらないのが口惜しいのですが、わずか30数分というミニアルバムのような作品の中に、わずか3曲でも「一生ものの名曲」を提供してくれるあたりはDPの底力を感じさせます。
