いま思えば結構衝撃的なデビュー・アルバム。ベン・ワットとトレーシー・ソーンそれぞれの個性が巧くブレンドされた名盤。ほろ苦い青さも残る清新さ、エッジの利いたアコーティック・サウンド、そしてクールなジャズ・テイスト。青春の終焉をほろ苦く追憶するかの如し、そんな気分にさせられる。「Each and Every One」「Bittersweet」「I Must Confess」あたり、何度も繰り返し聴いた。代表格の彼らとともに、チェリーレッドレーベルも当時勢いがあった。

僕にとって聴くたびに、甘酸っぱく切ない気持ちが甦るアルバム。それがこのE.B.T.Gの1st「エデン」です。

最初から新しいとは感じなかったけれど、今聴いても少しも古びていない、そんなクラシックな香りがいつ聴いても漂ってきます。演奏が特別卓越しているわけでもなければ、歌がものすごく上手いわけでもない、それなのにとてもシックで上質な音。こういう音って、それまで誰も出せてなかったと思います。そういう意味では新しさはあったというわけです。もちろんフェイク・ジャズというものは、以前にもあったのだけど、今作はジャズそのものとは違ったものでありながら、フェイク特有のショボさみたいな感覚は少しもありません。スタイル・カウンシルの1st「カフェ・ブリュ」はゲストにトレイシー･ソーンを呼び寄せたように、完全にこのアルバムを下敷きにしています。そんな一つの流れを作った重要作でもあり、今でも本当に輝き続けているアルバムだなと感じます。
それにしても、トレイシーとベンの二人はきれいに曲を書き分けていながら、トータルでのまとまりが大変いいのは、やはり運命の相手だったのだなと感心させられます。
