このアルバムが発売された当時は、
「日本の和太鼓」や「アフリカの民族音楽」をヒントに作り上げられた作品と言われていましたが、
インタビューでジョンは、
「違う。これは、古い時代に教会で使われていた宗教的な音楽だ。」
というような事を言っていました。
同じ質問に対する答えも、その時々で答えが違うジョンのことなので(笑)、
真偽のほどは定かではありません。
ただ、打楽器が主役となって作り出す怒涛のリズムは、
圧巻としかいいようがありません。
元ネタが何であっても、そんなことはどうでもいいのです。
現在、世の中にあふれている機械で刻まれるペラペラのビートとはわけが違うのです。
時には、ジョンのヴォーカルやキースのギターまでもが打楽器と化して、
ひとつのリズムの塊を作って吐き出しています。

ジョンの歌声は前作同様、というか、さらにお経度・呪文度に磨きがかかっています。
しかし、キースの空間を切り裂くようなヒステリックなギターは、あまり聴くことができません。
収録されている曲の性格上、仕方のないことだと思うのですが、ちょっと残念です。
ギターは、ほとんどが効果音的な扱いです。
また、その役割も、キーボード取って代わられる場面が多くなっています。
ただし、「Go Back」では、痺れるようなキンキンしたギターが聴けます。
これはカッコいいです！
もちろん、その他の曲もビリビリきます。
スピーカーで大音量で聴くも良し！　ヘッドフォンで聴くも良し！
神経を揺さぶって、飛ばしてくれます！！

初来日のライブで、「Flowers of Romance」や「Under The House」を生で聴いたのですが、
やっぱりレコード(CD)の方がかっこいいです。
このアルバムのグルーヴは、再現不可能だと思います。

ベースのジャーが脱退したために、
このアルバムではこのようなスタイルを選択したのかもしれないのですが、
「ここにジャーのベースが乗っかってきたら、どんなにすごいことになっていたのだろう…」
と、ありえないことを想像してしまったりするのです。

それと、このアルバムをリリースした頃に、
ジャネット・リーがメンバーとして加入しています。
何をしている人なのかが、ずーっと気になっていたんですが、
ジョンが言うには、
「キースが連れてきたんだけど、結局彼女は何もしなかった。」
やっぱりそうか…(笑)

ピストルズ時代は「未来なんてねぇーぜー、おい!!」って叫んでいたジョニー・ロットンであったのだが、ロットン(rotten=「腐れた」の意)なんてしみったれた名前を捨てて、本名のジョン・ライドンとして未来を作っていく決心をすることとなり、その証として結成したバンドの三作目がこれ。
前作【METAL BOX】ではベーシストのジャー・ウーブルの存在が大きかったが、彼を欠いたバンドが本作でとったアプローチが、プリミティヴなパーカッションとギターノイズ、そしてライドンの、時にイスラムチックに聞こえてしまうエキセントリックな歌唱を三つ巴とした、非常にミクスチャー色が強い音楽性の創出であった。

更にライドン自身がロンドンパンクの寵児であった為に、そこで培われた毒々しさもたっぷりと注入され、それらが化学反応を起こした結果は、あまりに濃密で、かつ緊張感溢れる不協和音の創出であり、そしてそれは他の誰とも似つかない、特異な音楽空間をうみだすこととなってしまった。
ポスト・ＵＫパンクを代表する名盤である。

　元セックス・ピストルズのボーカリストであるジョニー・ロットンが、その名前をジョン・ライドンに変えて結成したのが、このバンドですね。だからといって、パンクを期待しては駄目。このアルバムは、コンセプチュアルな前衛といえる構成になっています。このバンドのアルバムの中でも、特に民族音楽っぽい、プリミティブな内容ですから、聴く人を選ぶ感じがします。ただ前衛に惹かれる人や、既存の音楽への不満、強い破壊衝動などお持ちの方には、お勧めですよ。ジョン・ライドンは、声も楽器の一部として考え、歌詞の意味への依存から離れた音楽を、このアルバムで目指したようです。暗く、狂気に満ちた楽曲に、馴れてくると心地良さを感じるのはなぜでしょう？興味のある方は体験してみてください。た!!だし、騙されたと思い、気に入らなかったとしても怒らないでね。それだけ癖の強い音楽なのです。
