The disc is titled Early Works. Come Out (1966) and It's Gonna Rain were the first Reich compositions released on LP, electronic works based on tape-recorded voices processed in fairly simple but intriguing ways. The hypnotic power of Come Out was the first Reich to catch my attention years ago. Piano Phase and Clapping Music use the same musical procedures, only for live performers. I don't know if this is an important disc except for people following Reich's career, but though he has gone on to greater things, these pieces still have the power to intrigue and move me. --Leslie Gerber

4.0 out of 5 stars ライヒの原点の２曲が入っている作品集, 2008/6/20
ライヒのほとんどの作品は演奏家を変えて再録することも可能でしょうが、
Come outとIt's gonna Rainはその作品と作曲の動機が密接に結びつけられ
ているため再録はおそらく不可能では。

Come outは無実の罪で逮捕された少年を支援するため作られた作品で、その
少年の供述の言葉の"Come out show them"をループして作品としたもの、
It's gonna rainは黒人教会での説教師の言葉をループしたもので、当時の
環境と分かちがたいという意味での彼の原点ともいえる記念碑的作品です。
とはいえ、曲の面白さという意味では、声の抑揚がタペストリーとなる点は
面白いですが、１０分を超えるとさすがに退屈さを感じすることも事実。

なぜこの２曲とカップリングとなってるかは全く不明（録音時期が全く異な
る）ですが、一緒に納められているPiano phaseとClapping Musicは快感的
ミニマルを求める方には超オススメ。
Clappingは腕に覚えのある方ならすぐにでもやれそうですね（でも楽譜はた
った3ページで６千円です(T_T)。
昔、ヒリアードアンサンブルの日本公演でもClapping Musicは披露されまし
たが、彼らの歌声を求めて聞きに来た方（で現代音楽に関心のない方）は
ちょっと（怒）だったのでは（笑）。

はじめてsteve reichを聴く人には取っ付きにくいかもしれません。
人の声をサンプリングして、反復、ずらして徐々に変化させていく。
または二人の人間拍手だけの音楽。

でもこれらの要素がsteve reichの他のアルバムにも共通する要素であると思います。
短いフレーズの反復や、その中での微妙な変化。

僕はこのアルバムが大好きです。
it's gonna rainでは人の声の移ろいがこれほど面白いものかと
つい聞きいってしまいます。

もし素敵な音色や素晴らしいフレーズの反復の繰り返しを求めるなら、
music for 18 musiciansやelectric counter pointなどをおすすめします。

でも、steve reichのエッセンスを知るにはこの盤が一番持って来いではないかと思います。
