メタル界、ラウドロック界の奇才にして鬼才、DEVIN TOWNSENDの結成したバンドの2ndです。
ギターとヴォーカルの上手さはあのSTEVE VAIに認められ、
VAIのバンドのヴォーカルを務めていたくらいですし、
EBM(今はTECHNO)アーティストの大御所、Front Line Assemblyに参加した経験もあり、
綿密なプログラミングまでもこなす人です。
しかも元DEATHの超人ドラマー、Gene Hoglanが人間離れしたドラムを叩いてます。
“音の洪水”と表現される、ハイテンション、ラウドでダイナミックなスタイルですが、
SYL作品の中で最もメロディアスなアルバムであり、聴きやすさもダントツです。
個人的には2.や4.、9.が好きです。
間違い無くラウドロック最高頂の作品です。

みなさんこのバンド知ってますか？やばすぎます！
ドラムのジーンは元ＤＥＡＴＨでやってました。とにかく人間離れした打ち込みのようなドラムは聴く者に鳥肌を・・・
ヴォーカルのデヴィンはやはり天才。
ドコドコ・キザミ系の好きな人は絶対聴くべし！！！

デヴィンのS.Y.Lの2nd。
数多いデヴィン作品の中でズバ抜けてインパクト大の作品がこの「CITY」。
はじめて聴いた時、もの凄い音圧に「なんじゃこりゃあ！？」とまず驚いた。
雑誌では「空間恐怖症」とまでいわれていたが、まさにそんな感じの音。ギターのノイズやら、キーボードやら、色んな音に埋め尽くされた、それまでに聴いたことの無いサウンドに圧倒された。
「キン、キン、キン」という金属音から、イントロ的な1曲目からアルバムの幕を開ける。
そして2曲目からが凄い。
デヴィンの叫びに続き、ジーン・ホグランの嵐のようなドラミング！
圧倒的な音圧でやかましく展開していくのだが、なんだか爽やかなんだよなー。
激しい音の合間合間に爽やかな歌メロが顔をのぞかせる。
やかましいんだけど、爽やか。これがこのアルバムの最大の魅力なんじゃないかなと思う。
また3曲目で見せる、デヴィンの歌のキレっぷり。
狂いすぎて、アダモちゃん（？）みたいな言葉を発してます。

心にたまったウップンを全て吐き出しかの様な、デヴィンの激しい気持が全てきっちり詰められた作品じゃないだろうか。
そして、爽やかさと激しさの混沌が「CITY」の魅力。
最近のS.Y.L作品は何だか丸く収まってしまって残念だなー。
本人は「ストレスミュージック」と言っているようだが、
私にとっては、聴いてると元気がもらえる
「滋養強壮ミュージック」だ。
