　前作まではデス・メタルだったが、3rdアルバムとなる本作よりAnneke van Giersbergen（女性）が加入。歌い上げる美しいメタルに変身した。当初は後任女性バック・ヴォーカルのつもりでオーディションしていたそうだが、1人でも存在感のある彼女の歌声と、多彩なメロディー作りに、「これは男性ヴォーカルを入れなくても良いのではないか？」と言うことになり、当初は予定していなかった紅一点の編成が完成する。

　女性を中心にしたことで、美しいサウンドを標榜。ギター・ワークもクリーンになった。そうしてリリースされた「Mandylion」は欧州・米大陸で記録的な枚数を叩き出し、現在では代表作として認知される。で、その女性ヴォーカルの名前だが、英語読みだとアネク・ヴァン・ガースバーゲンとなることから、日本はアネクと呼ばれているが、現地読みではアンネッケ・ファン・ヒエルスベルヒェンとなるらしい。

　カスレや割れのない、美しい声で、声量豊かに歌われる各曲は魅力十分。ツイン・ギター＋キーボードのゴージャスな演奏も、分厚いが分離が良く、また抑えるべき所はきちんと抑えてあるため表情豊かだ。そして何と言ってもメロディーがいい。ギター・リフもキーボード・リフも、そして主旋律も。「マンディリィオン＝聖骸布（せいがんふ）」という宗教遺物をタイトルに据えた古代への憧憬。それが見事な各曲となって像を結んでいる。代表曲となった 1 をはじめ、2, 3, 4, 7。ずらりと並ぶ名曲がこのアルバムの信じられないクオリティーを物語っている。

　女性ヴォーカル：アネク・ファン・ガースバーゲンを擁する、オランダのゴシック・メタル・バンド The Gathering の代表作。1995年発表の、3rd.アルバム。

　デビュー・アルバム「Always...」、2nd「Almost A Dance」ではそれぞれ別の男性ヴォーカルが歌っていたが、本作よりヴォーカルが女性１人に固定された。この「暗黒の歌姫」アネクの伸びのある歌唱と、ヘヴィかつクリアなリフ、そして空間的なキーボードを以て、それまでとは全く異なるゴシック・メタルを構築。ヨーロッパにセンセイションを巻き起こした。

　女性ヴォーカルのゴシックというと、弱々しい声で漂うように歌うものが多い。男性メタル・ファン向けに、大抵ヴォーカルは美形を連れて来ている。しかし、このバンドは違う。アネク嬢、身体は太めで、外見はまぁまぁ。笑顔は人なつっこいが濃いメイクでちょっと怖い（苦笑）。外見で男性ファンが付くのはあまり期待できなそうだ（笑）。

　その代わり、低音からクリアに立ち上がるパワーのある歌唱で、ヘヴィなバッキングを堂々と引っ張る。欧州の女性ロック・シンガーでは恐らく随一の歌唱力で、「歌の上手さ」で聴衆を魅了する。

　次作「Nighttime Birds」（1997年）では幅広いタイプの楽曲に挑戦する彼女らだが、本作「Mandylion」では、ヘヴィなゴシック・サウンド１本で勝負している。妖しく美しい独特のメロディーで、古代文明の宗教儀式みたいな雰囲気がある。

　バンドはツイン・ギターにキーボード、ベース、ドラム＋ヴォーカルの６人編成。リフは相当ヘヴィなのだが、キーボードが帯同するためクリアで、耳障りな感じは全然ない。
　ゴシックゆえ、基本的にスピードの遅い曲が多いのだが、アネクの手によるヴォーカル・ラインが多彩で飽きさせない。それと、曲によっては Black Sabbath のように、後半倍速になって盛り上がるものもある。インスト曲では民族的なリズムにチャレンジしたりして、カラーは同一だがバリエーションは豊富だ。
　アネクの歌詞は、基本的にはラヴ・ソングなのだが、女の情念を感じさせるディープさもあり、ハマると癖になる魅力を持っている。

　現在は廃盤だが、ビクターから発売された日本盤には、シングル・オンリーの新曲が２曲追加されていてお得だった。しかも、どちらも非常に良い曲…。「Adrenaline」はCentury Mediaのコンピレイションでも聴けるが、「Third Chance」のSingle Versionは、もうどのアルバムでも聴くことはできない。何とか再発売を期待したいものだ。

　追伸：筆者は多少ふっくら目の女性が好みで、二の腕好きなので、外見も結構ポイントになっていたりする（自爆）。

3rd。前作は評判の良くないアルバムなので聴いていないが、今作では1stとは大幅に異なる方法論によるゴシックメタルをやっている。このアルバムから参加することとなった、ゴシックメタルシーンで最も有名な女性vo（多分；）Anneke van Giersbergenが全ヴォーカル・パートを歌っているのである。この暗黒の歌姫が歌う、暗鬱とした伸びやかな美声による、悲しみを湛えた楽曲が何とも心に響くのである。Anneke嬢の美声にばかり耳を奪われがちだが、叙情的で繊細なギターや、Keyによるアレンジ、なども秀逸であり、楽曲の完成度を上げている。
