90年代ブラックメタルのシリアスな邪悪化を決定付けたのがMAYHEMなら、暗黒面をより深化させたのが同じくノルウェー産の一人ブラック、BURZUM。聴く者の精神を暗黒の底無し沼にズブズブと引きずり込む3rdアルバム。
4曲44分。大作主義。即効性や分かりやさはない。かっこいいリフにヘッドバンギングで盛り上がれる、エキサイティングなやつではない。むしろ、どんどん落ちていく。健全な人間には無用な音楽でしょう。逆に、波長の合ってしまった人間にとっては掛値なしの名盤。俺はアナログ盤も買ってしまいました。
そんな俺にとってはとても聴き応えのある内容で、アルバム一枚で全一曲と捉えることもできるトータル性があります。ヴォーカルは攻撃的というよりも、この世に絶望しきったような悲痛な叫び。空虚で、投げやりで、荒んでいて、沈み込んでいて、病んでいる音楽。
繰り返しのパートが多いですが、そうやって異様なムードを盛り上げていくのです。とくにヴォーカル無しの4曲目、シンセで5つ程度のフレーズを14分間ひたすら繰り返す様は圧巻。偏執的な繰り返しによって、シンセの澄んだ音色が逆にヤバい感触を帯びてくる。透明な狂気。これほど虚脱しきった曲、そうはないでしょう。生きる力を奪わてしまうような曲。ジャケットに描かれた世界そのままの、”最期”な音楽。
落ち込んでる時に聴くと、もっと落ち込めるアルバム。「落ちてる」ときの精神状態にもろにハマる、しかし、ある意味とても純粋で美しい音楽。ブラックメタルの多様性を証明する名盤。最初は気に入らなくても、手放さずに時々挑戦してほしいです。オレも最初は?でした。曲単位というより、全体に漂う雰囲気に浸るつもりで。これを好きになれれば、よりディープにブラックメタルの暗黒面を探究できるようになれるのでは、と思います。それは不幸なことかもしれませんが…(笑)。

　音楽の内容は、ジャケットの絵そのままである。寂れた農村。森の中に転がっている死体の上を飛ぶ烏。芸術的かどうかは別として、ほかに例がない音楽であるのは確かである。
