ギターにジミー･レイニーさん、ピアノにアル・ヘイグさんを従えてのスタン･ゲッツさんの51年のライブ盤。前半はバピッシュな曲が続きます。特に5曲目では、お客さんから「イィ~、ィヤッホォーー!!｣と叫び声が聞こえるほどの白熱した演奏が繰り広げられます。しかし、そんな中、10.エブリスィング・ハプンズ・トゥー・ミーでのゲッツさんの第一声でもう、メロメロです。ゲッツさんのテーマ、ギターのソロ、ピアノのソロで終わる3分少々の短い演奏ですが、この演奏がきっかけで、僕はエブリスィング・ハプンズ・トゥー・ミーの他の演奏を探し回ったり、そこから、作曲者のマット･デニスさんの他の曲を探し回ったりし始めのでした。

スタン・ゲッツのテナーは、このアルバムの中で何度も満天の星空を描き、
何度も夢の中をふわりと歩かせてくれた。
ジャンピング・ウィズ・シンフォニー・シッドにしびれてしまい、
何度も繰り返し聞いてしまった。それくらいの価値は十分あります。

40年代終わりからその才能を開花させ、何度かのスランプはあったものの不死鳥のようによみがえっていったゲッツの初期の傑作アルバム。数あるモダン･テナーの中でもレスター･ヤングのフレーズを都会的に継承しつつスイング感あふれるソロを展開しているゲッツの存在を過小評価してはならない。当時のゲッツはクール派の代表的存在であり、50年代を通じて人気の面で他の追随を許さなかった。ゾー・スウェル、モスキート・ニーズ、ムーヴといったクール･バップな曲やザ・ソング・イズ・ユーやエヴリシング・ハプンズ・トゥ・ミー、イエスタデイズなどのスタンダードでみせるメロディアスなアドリブのうまさに圧倒される。ライブの雰囲気が実によく伝わり、リラックスした演奏のなかで適度の緊張感が名演の誉れを高めているのであろう。ゲッツ、ロリンズ、コルトレーンは、50年代前半、50年代後半、60年代前半という時代をそれぞれ異なったテナー･サックスのスタイルでリレーしていったのだという見方も出来よう。とりわけ早熟の天才ゲッツのこの時期の演奏はモダン･ジャズの歴史の中で周囲の水準から突出した貴重なものである。
