   テナー・サックス奏者のウエイン・ショーターは、初めアート・ブレイキーのジャズ・メッセンジャーズの一員だったが、マイルス・デイヴィスに見出され、彼のクインテットに参加する。
   このアルバムは彼がマイルス・バンドに参加する直前の姿をとらえたもので、共演者のトランペッター、リー・モーガンは、アート・ブレイキーのバンドで共にメッセンジャーズのフロントに立った仲間だ。
   演奏内容は1960年代ジャズ・シーンで重要な位置をしめた「新主流派」ジャズの代表作といえるもので、オーソドックスなジャズのフォーマットの範囲内でサウンドの響きや演奏の展開の新しさを追及している。オリジナル曲を演奏するショーターは極めて個性的で、マイルス・デイヴィスがその才能を高く買ったのも頷ける。（後藤雅洋）

アート･ブレイキー＆ジャズメッセンジャーズ在籍時の1964年、
「ウェイニング･モーメンツ」以来2年間のインターバルを空けて
満を持して発表したのがこのソロアルバムである。

ジャズメッセンジャーズでの気心の知れた同僚リー･モーガンに、
ジョン･コルトレーンバンドのリズム隊を加えた
完全無欠のゴールデンメンバーで臨んだこのアルバムは、
全てオリジナル曲で構成されている。

リー･モーガンとのハーモニゼーション、
怒気迫るウェイン･ショーターのソロ、
そして熱く走るマッコイ･タイナーのフィンガーテクニック。

息をするのを忘れる緊張の連続に「Charcoal Blues」といった
箸休めのような曲も用意されている。

一曲一曲素晴らしくまた個性の強い曲でありながら、
アルバム全体としてのバランスも良い文字通りの名盤である。

まずタイトルとなっている一曲目のNightDreamer。３拍子で心地よいリズム隊に始まり、SaxとPtが加わって・・・。とにかくこのCDは心地よい！！日曜日に部屋ででゆったりくつろいでる時なんかは、全然邪魔にならないから、何度でもリピートで聴いていられる、そんなCDです。でもだからといって、だらだらしているワケではなく、もちろん聴き所も満載です！！Shorterの独特のSoloに加えて、LeeMorganの気持ちいいSoloもはまったら抜けられません！

60年代はじめにジャズメッセンジャーズの加入からマイルス・デイビス・クインテットへの参加にいたるまでのショーターの足跡は、３人の偉大なジャズマンとの出会いによって、スパイラルに飛躍していった時期だといえよう。すなわち、ブレーキー・コンボ（J.M)での音楽監督（編曲者）としての自己の才能の開花、コルトレーンへの接近と影響によるサックス演奏者としての飛躍、マイルスとの出会いによる作曲家としての完成である。いわば、ショーターにおける自己進化論がここで実現されているのだ。そんな中でも、このアルバムは高い完成度と、ブレイキー、コルトレーン、マイルスへのオマージュ的ポジションを形作っている。盟友リー・モーガン（ジャズメッセンジャーズ）をフィーチャーし、コルトレーンのリズム隊による仮想コルトレーンのフォーマットでの演奏、マイルスコンボで後に実現する数々のオリジナルへの準備。もちろんそれはこのアルバムだけで実施したものではなく、ビー・ジェイ、ブルーノートの５~６枚のアルバムを通して、緩やかに、確実に実現されたのである。Night Dreamer、Black Nileなど印象的なテーマの曲も多く、彼の魅力が満載の優れたアルバムである。ぶれた写真のジャケットも演奏内容のイメージを伝えている。
