この作品の内容はジャケットに象徴されています。
全体はモノクロで、冷たいコンクリートに寄りかかり
ヒップなスーツを着たワルっぽいジョーヘン。
こういうの「かっこいい」と思ってしまうんです、僕は。

この作品、演奏は熱いんだけど空気感は、とにかくクール。
「額に汗しながらの熱演は暑苦しいんだよね」と
思っていたかどうかは定かではないけど、
感情的にならない、そのスマートな演奏スタイルは
よく切れるナイフが放つ、冷たく鈍い輝きを思わせます。
ジョーヘン、ケニー・ドーハムの演奏中の「間」や
マッコイのピアノ・バッキングがそういった空気感を醸しています。
ブルー・ボッサもいいけどリコーダ・ミーがよりクールか。
総合的にかっこよくて５つ星。ジャズ初心者の方にもオススメです。

ハード・バップからモードへの転換期にデビューしたジョン・ヘンダーソンはウェイン・ショーターらとともにポスト・コルトレーンの１番手として期待され数多くのセッションにも参加している。密度があり、ダークで重厚なサウンドとモードを完全に自己のオリジナリティにまで高めたフレージングは他の追随を許さず、本家のコルトレーン以上にメロディアスで創造性豊かなソロを展開した。システマティックで歌心を持ったモーダルなアドリブは、60年代の新主流派のジャズに大きな貢献をし、競演者たちにも影響を及ぼした。ブルー・ボッサが有名だが、リコーダ・ミーにおける見事な語り口はすでに名人芸の域に達しており、当時やはり売り出し中であったチャールス・ロイドなどと比べると月とスッポンといえるほどのイマジネーションの差がある。僕自身1997年にニューヨークのブルーノートで生演奏を聴いたことがある。音の太さに反して、思ったより小柄なヘンダーソンではあったが、衰えを知らぬ演奏のパワーのすごさに圧倒された。彼自身の経歴としては、共演者としての印象が強いので、やや割を食っている感もあるが、もっと評価しなければならないミュージシャンの一人だといえよう。

初のリーダー作品。名曲、"Blue Bossa"にはじまり、"Recorda Me"など、デビュー作品にして哀愁のある渋い演奏は彼ならでは。先輩格のドーハムの影響か？日本人好みのメロディをたっぷり聴かせてくれる。
