ブルースフィーリング溢れるプレイでブルーノートデビューしたグリーンだが、1963年から65年にかけて新主流派との競演を繰り返す。エルヴィン、ラリーヤング、マッコイといった猛者たちと、Talkin AboutやSolid、Matadorなどの傑作を残している（とはいえ、グリーンのギタースタイル自体はほとんど変わっていないのだが。）

本作「抱きしめたい」も、そういった流れの後半にレコーディングされた作品である。

まず、選曲が非常にバリエーションに富んだものとなっているのも特徴だ。当時流行したビートルズやボサノヴァを積極的に取れいれようとする姿勢が見える。グリーンは他のアルバムでも、パーカーナンバーからカントリー、ＪＢナンバーなど多彩なタイプの曲を演奏している。おそらく人がやっているものをすぐ取り入れたがる性格だったのだろう。

全体的には、グリーンの作品の中では地味な印象を受ける。しかしよく聴けば、これはグリーンの魅力がたっぷり詰まった、全く隙のない傑作であることがわかる。

まず一曲目のタイトルナンバーが素晴らしい。くつろいだ雰囲気の中で、グリーンはその肉感的なトーンでシンプルなフレーズを次々に繰り出している。ギターの弦がフレットに触って音が詰まっていてもお構いなし、それさえ魅力的に聞こえる。モブレーも全盛期こそ過ぎているが、よく歌ったいいソロをとっている。

二曲目のスピークロウではエルヴィンを含めたメンバー全員が疾走し、三曲目、六曲目のスタンダードでもグリーンは充実したソロを聞かせる。

注目したいのは五曲目の「何か素敵なことが起こりそうな予感」。あまり取り上げられることのない曲だが、これぞジャズギタリスト、グラントグリーンというソロが聴ける。いい意味で力の抜けた演奏で、シンプルだが全く無駄がない。

コマーシャルな作品と言われることの多い本作だが、グリーンの魅力を余すところなく伝えてくれる、愛すべき傑作である。

ジャケットも素晴らしいではないですか。

ジャケットの女性が女房に似てるという理由だけで「ジャケ買い」しました。ポピュラーソングばかりでお堅いジャズファンは眉をしかめるかもしれませんが、そこは腐ってもブルーノートです。リラックスしたムードの中にグリーン特有のツボを心得た音数の少ないギターが見事にマッチして何度聴いても疲れない極上のイージーリスニングジャズに仕上がってますね。モブレーのモゴモゴとした東北弁のようなテナーも健在です。休日の午後、お気に入りの本を片手にコーヒーでもすすりながら聴きたい一枚です。

このＣＤの１曲目（及びタイトル）は、そうです
ビートルズのあの「抱きしめたい」のカバーです。
タイトル曲の他にもスピーク・ロウ、ステラ…、コルコヴァドなど
スタンダード満載でジャズ初心者の方にもお奨めですよ。
編成はオルガンが入ってて、エルビンがドラム叩いてて
けっこうゴリゴリしてるかなぁ、と思われるかもしれませんが
どちらかといえば、むしろポップで聴きやすい一枚です。
なにしろグリーンの軽めであったかいギタープレイに
中量級代表選手モブレーの優しいテナーですから
肩の力が抜けた作品（もちろん良い意味で）になってるのも納得です。
「クッキー食べながらコーヒー」みたいなイージーリスニングでも全然ＯＫ。
日曜日の午後なんかにリラックスして聴きたい一枚です。
のんびりできて5つ星。
ところでジャケットの女性は誰なんでしょう？無国籍なお顔立ちですが…
