　マンデル・ロウのギターとジョージ・ドゥヴィヴィエのベースのみをバックに、サラがリラックスした歌唱を聴かせる。“My favorite things”、“Ev'ry time we say goodbye”という曲順は、明らかにコルトレーンのアルバム“My favorite things”を意識したもの。録音は1961年7月。

　かの女のバラッドのうまさを味わうには最適のアルバム。じつは最近、「エラ、サラ、カーメンは聴かない」と公言する知人に名前を伏せて聴かせてみた。すっかり気に入ったところで名前を明かすと、「なんだサラって重くないんだ」と言う。先入観というか食わず嫌いというか、いったい誰の影響なんだ！ 軽く歌っても完璧。それがかの女のすごいところなのだが、なまじ「完璧」とか「すごい」なんて言葉を使うから敬遠されるのかも。
　夜更けに小さめの音量で聴いていると、神経が鎮静されていく。安心して心身ともにゆだねられる音楽。サラももちろん素晴らしいが、マンデル・ロウのひかえめで粋なギターにも、ぜひ耳を傾けてやって欲しい。

かすかなピアノのイントロにサラの歌声の続く「マイ　フェイバリット　シングズ」ではじまる、このアルバムは、わたしのお気に入りの一枚。題名の「アフター・アワーズ」のとおり、ステージのはねたあ後のくだけた雰囲気を表現したごきげんなアルバムです。

　最小限のバックミュージックで歌う、サラのサッシー・モードいっぱいの、まさに黄金期を象徴するような一枚ではないかと思います。
