オーネット・コールマンと組んだ「フリー・ジャズ」では集団即興を試みていますが，ブッカー・リトルとの”ファイブ・スポット”でのライブなどは，むしろメイン・ストリーム的な演奏をしているというように，ドルフィーは幅広いスタイルに適合できる器用な音楽家ということができるでしょう。そのドルフィーが本当に既成のスタイルを超えようとしている瞬間がこのCDに記録されています。チャーリー・パーカーをさらに高速にして調性から自由に歌うアルトによるソロ演奏など，このCDでしか聴くことができない，本当のドルフィーのオリジナリティーに触れることができます。

~そのむかし未発見の音源がＣＤでのみ発売となったので、これを聴くために僕はＣＤプレーヤーを買ったのだった。一聴、異世界へ連れ去られた。ドルフィーがインド音楽を研究していたとは！　ドルフィーのＣＤとしては水準作、インド音楽としても水準作、最高傑作「ラストデイト」には及ばないけれども、ドルフィーファンの必須アイテムだろう。なによりドルフ~~ィーの音楽にかける情熱がひしひしとかんじられるのだ。~

エリック・サティやシェーンベルク、ラヴィ・シャンカール、ピグミーの音楽を研究していたというエリック・ドルフィーですが、その成果は生前発表された商業的な録音ではあまり聴くことができませんでした。そんな研究の成果として残された録音を集めたこのＣＤは、『アウト・トゥ・ランチ』『ラスト・デイト』と同等の意義をもつ、優れた作品集だ、とあえて言いたい気がする…

アルトによる二つの演奏（そのうちのひとつはロン・カーターとの素晴らしいデュオ）と、フルートによるふたつのソロ（アビー・リンカーンの『ストレート・アヘッド』の歌の背後での、鳥のさえずりのようなピッコロ演奏を思いださせる）、そしてタブラその他の楽器と共演した長尺のフルート演奏…

ここに収められている音楽は、
自らを解放するための孤独な（ソロ/非ソロに関わりなく）作業としてのフリー・ジャズであり、
「ワールドミュージック」のようにムード的にではなく、体験として民族音楽と向き合おうとする試みであり、
それらはドルフィーの死後、時代の流れと共に、心ある人々によって表面化されてきた探求の形であり、これらの録音は、ドルフィーの音楽への姿勢の正しさと先駆性を改めて認識させるものだ。

それと同時に、当時、この優れた演奏家に自らの音楽を自然なかたちで発展させるための土壌を提供することのできなかった音楽業界というものの不毛さに、いまさらですが絶望を覚えました。
