   モダン・ジャズ・ピアノの元祖といわれるバド・パウエルの鬼気迫る演奏を聴きたいのなら、『アメイジング・バド・パウエル』のVol.1かVol.2、あるいは『バド・パウエルの芸術』といったアルバムを聴けばいい。しかしパウエルの作品中、日本でもっとも人気があり、愛されているのは間違いなく本作だろう。ポール・チェンバース＆アート・テイラーとのトリオで、全曲オリジナルを演奏している58年録音作。

パウエルがBlue Noteに残したリーダーアルバムとしては最後の作品。パウエルは、自身の体調によって好不調の波がありますが、ブルーノートの演奏はどれも高い水準にあると思います。この「シーン・チェンジズ」はすべてパウエルのオリジナル。本人の意気込みもその演奏から伝わってきます。１曲目の「クレオパトラの夢」はかつてＣＭにも使われ、日本のジャズファンにあまねく知られている曲。アップテンポで憂いを含んだ美しいメロディを弾くそのプレイで聞く者の心をつかんでいきます。クレオパトラ以外の曲もパウエルらしい魅力あふれる曲が多く末永く愛聴盤になるでしょう。

　この演奏時（’５８年）はもうとっくに彼の全盛期を過ぎていた時期で、長年のそううつ病のせいか、演奏もかなり出来不出来が激しかったと言われるが。このアルバムは幸い健康にも恵まれた時期のもので、演奏にも非常に活気が見られる。なんと言っても昔、ＣＭ曲にも使われた「クレオパトラの夢」を含む前半部が最高に乗っている。あのうなり声さえ聞きようによってはなぜか演奏にマッチしたようにも聞こえるから不思議である。後半パワーが多少落ちるのが残念だが、彼のごろごろとしたピアノを堪能できるアルバムと言えよう。
　私はかつて、このアルバムを聞く夜、雰囲気をつけようと、部屋を暗くして煎りたてのコーヒーを飲みながら思考に耽り、聴いたことがあったが面倒くさくなってすぐにやめた。
　何のことはない、いいアルバムはどんなシチュエーションで聴いてもいいのだ。ジャズ愛好家のなかには、この盤を好まない人も多くいるときくが、やっぱり、ジャズの名盤には違いないと個人的には思う。
　彼はその後６０年代中頃まで多数の録音を残している。晩年の彼は（といってもまだ３０歳代だったのだ！）なんとなくよっぱらいの千鳥足ごとく、よろよろとしたピアノタッチで弾いていたが、それはそれで人間臭くて私は好きだ。

ブルーノートのバド・パウエルの5枚については、5枚のUS盤(またはUK盤)RVGエディション(Vol.1と2の収録順が変わっていますがVol.1と2ですべてを網羅しており)にすべてボーナストラックが付いていますが、決定盤1500シリーズは、LP時代のままで一切オマケ無しです。ゆえに、もう買っちゃった人は仕方ないけど、よっぽどのマニアで何度も繰り返し同じようなのを買う趣味の人や日本語解説が必要な人以外は、1999年~2003年に発売されたUS盤(またはUK盤)RVGエディションで揃えたほうが断然お得です！しかも安価！アーティスト名 "bud powell"で一気に探せると思います。決定盤1500シリーズにはこういうのが多いので要注意です。

初期のパウエルを好きな人には、物足りない作品です。左手の動きがすくない。ただ、メロディーラインはとても綺麗なので、JAZZ入門者にはうってつけの作品。
