   1959年録音の本作は、ハードバップ史上最高のバンドの初期の記録といえる。ピアニストのシルバー率いるクインテットは、他にブルー・ミッチェル（トランペット）、ジュニア・クック（テナー・サックス）、ジーン・テイラー（ベース）、ルイス・ヘイズ（ドラムス）という編成。このグループはこの時点ですでにシルバーならではの正確でハードなスイングを見事に表現していた。

   各メンバーのソロはストレートで分かりやすく、感情表現としても音楽的にも常に的を得ていた。またミッチェルの繊細なフレースとクックの熱いプレイによるコントラストも効果的で、バップの複雑さとブルースやゴスペルのストレートな部分を融合させるという、シルバーの音楽感にぴたりとはまっている。このセッションでは落ち着いた雰囲気の「Peace」と楽しくファンキーな「Sister Sadie」という、シルバーのスタンダード2曲も素晴らしいが、バンド全体のインパクトも負けない位強烈だ。このグループは結束が固く、この5年後シルバーがバンドを解散した後も、残りの4人は若きピアニスト、チック・コリアを迎えてブルー・ミッチェル・クインテットとして活動を続けた。(Stuart Broomer, Amazon.com)

一曲目から陽気に弾む楽器たち。
ジャズって聴いたこと無いんだけど、こういう音楽で、
こんな洒落てて楽しい曲が入ってるんだろう？という先入観が
そのまま通用する。初心者にとても優しく、ジャズ好きの頬も緩ませて
くれる嬉しい演奏ばかりだ。

　ある作品の解説に「ジャズの片面主義、1曲主義」という話があった。ジャズの場合、ＬＰの片面が良ければ勿論、1曲だけでも良い演奏があれば名盤であるという趣旨であった。
　その観点からみると、本作は超名盤ということになる。記憶に残る曲が目白押しだ。

　特に、1曲目の表題曲や5曲目の「シスター・セイディ」はファンキージャズの名曲である。

　しかし、個人的には2曲目の「セント・ヴィタス・ダンス」がとても好きである。非常にノリの良い曲の並ぶ本作の中にあって、どこか悲しげなメロディラインが非常に素晴らしい。

　ブラック系の音楽は基本的にそうだと思うが、アップテンポのノリの良さを前面にだしながらも、どこか影のあるメランコリックなメロディラインを持っている所に特徴があると思う。
　
　ジャズに限らず、ブラックミュージックが基本的に好きな人であれば聴いて損はないと思う。

ホレス・シルヴァーのトリオ編成にブルー・ミッチェル（トランペット）とジュニア・クック（テナー・サックス）に２管を加えたクインテットのアルバム。１９５９年の録音で、踊るようなシルヴァーのピアノにブルー・ミッチェルの軽快なトランペット。５０-６０年代のよき時代のスウィンギーな黒人ジャズ。テーマのフレーズから変奏、間奏やソロを経てテーマの演奏に戻るというジャズの「お約束」のパターンは安心して聴ける。やっぱりこの時代のジャズはいいなあ。と聴くたびに思う。（松本敏之）
