これほど一世を風靡したジャズ・アルバムがあっただろうか。昭和の真っ只中で突如ブームになったモダン・ジャズは黒人特有のソウルフルなスピリッツをふんだんに盛り込んだファンキーという爛熟期を迎えた。まさに元禄時代を思わせる大衆文化にモダン・ジャズが受け入れられたモメントでもあったのだ。何よりもボビー・ティモンズのMoanin'という名曲が大ヒットしたことがその一番の要因としてあげられるが、御大のアート・ブレーキーをはじめ、リー・モーガン、ベニー・ゴルソン、ティモンス、ジミー・メリットといったパーソネルの充実を見落としてはならない。特に新進トランペッター、リー・モーガンは当時怖いもの知らずの二十歳の若者で、スリリングなフレーズとブリリアントな音色でグループを華麗に際立たせた。演奏者としては過小評価気味のゴルソンだが、コルトレーンのシーツ・オブ・サウンズを思わせる密度の高いアドリブを展開している。また、ゴルソンの作編曲の才能は、Are You Real?などの名曲を生み出すとともに、グループに特有のサウンドをもたらすアレンジの手腕を発揮している。そのことは、このグループがバランスの取れた高い音楽性に支えられていたことを示すわけだが、同様にブレーキーのドラミングも単なる野性味だけでなく繊細で計算しつくされたセンシティブなものであったことを見逃してはならない。ジャズメッセンジャーズはこの録音の後、パリで大成功し、その余勢をかって日本で爆発的なヒット、さらに初来日をも果たし、本格的なファンキーブームの到来となった。50年代モダン・ジャズの一つの頂点を形成した至宝的名盤である。

かつて50年代に隆盛を極めたハードバップ、その中でも特にBlack色の強いファンキージャズと言われるものです。
本盤に収められた『Moanin’』はマイルスの『Round Midnight』と並び、ファンキージャズの代名詞とも言えるもので、この曲を知らなくともどこかで耳にしてる方も多いはずです。シンプルに楽しめるJAZZなので、普段あまりJAZZを聴かない方でも入りやすいアルバムだと思います。決められたコード進行という制約の中で各々アドリブでソロをぶちかます事をモットーとしたハードバップは、特にロックを主にして聴いてた方にとっては全く違和感なく受け入れる事のできるJAZZだと思います。アートブレイキーの超ファンキーなドラミングプレイを体験してみて下さい。

説明不要の人気盤、誰もが認める名盤である本作。ジャズといった音楽を聴こうかと思い始めた時に、候補に挙げられる一枚なのだと思います。
＃私の場合、実際には少し遠回りしてしまいましたが(^^;
何を置いても、余りにも有名、誰もが一度は聴いた事があると思われるテーマが秀逸な[1]が話題にのぼる事でしょう。この盤には別テイクである[2]も収録されていますが、どちらのテイクについても、最後にテーマに戻る直前のbソロがどうも苦手でして。ちょっと調子を外されると言いますか、、、他の方はどのようにお思いでしょうか。
勿論、バップ期の胎動、ファンキージャズへの幕開けを代表する名盤は本作に限らず多々存在するのでしょうが、何はともあれ、音楽好きというなら聴いておくべき作品かと思います。
＃私など、A.ブレイキー作品は(今のところ)本作しか所持していないので、
＃偉そうなことは申しあげられませんが。
