   リー・モーガン＆カーティス・フラーとの3管編成でのびのび、かつエネルギッシュに吹いている名作だ。ケニー・ドリュー、ポール・チェンバース、フィリー・ジョー・ジョーンズというリズム・セクションの顔ぶれも申し分ない。録音は57年。セロニアス・モンクとの交流を経て、コルトレーンが急成長を遂げた時代の演奏だけに、そのプレイは自信に満ちあふれ堂々としている。
   マイルス時代はともかく、コルトレーンのリーダー作にはどこか求道者的な色彩がつきまとう。だがこれは例外的な作品で、ファンキー・ムード満点、解放感いっぱいのハード・バップ・ジャズだ。重い戦車が疾走するようなコルトレーンの重厚なテナー、ブリリアントなリー・モーガンのトランペット・ソロ、もうすばらしいとしかいいようがない。大げさでなく、このアルバムを聴いていると、ジャズ・ファンでよかったとつくづく思う。これほど満足感を味わえるアルバムもめずらしい。（市川正二）

コルトレーンは時に初心者に難しいが、入門編として三枚選ぶとすれば、順に 「Ballads」 → 「My Favorite Things」 → 「Blue Train」 だろう。
ジャズって何？と思っている人に聞き易い 「Ballads」。コルトレーンはどう進化するのだろう？に少しだけその方向性を示す 「My Favorite Things」。そして本作、初心者にとっても聴き応えのある 「Blue Train」 だ。

楽器構成も厚く豪華に三管編成、しかもリー・モーガンのトランペットなら言うことはない。重厚な三管編成の聞き分けに挑戦していただきたい。サックスとリズムセクションならわけはないでしょうが、サックスとトランペットとトロンボーン。聞き分けられれば、もう入門編は卒業でしょう。

付け加えれば、リズムセクションもジャズ・ジャイアンツを集めており、入門者ではなくても垂涎の一枚だ。

コルトレーンの演奏はどれも素晴らしいけど、自分ではこのアルバムが一番気に入ってる。理由を挙げればきりが無いけど、サックスがブロウ気味でパワフル、しかも聞いていて熱くなる。ジャイアントステップのようなハイテクニカルな演奏やバラードのようなしっとりとした演奏とはまったく違い、いけいけムードでどうだ！参ったかっ！！と言う感じで吹きまくっている、このブラスの3人組のコンビネーションはたまらないくらい大好き。

大体のジャズファンやジャズに興味ある人なら納得しますよ。

マイルス・デイビスのオリジナル・クインテットが一時解散し、セロニアス・モンクのコンボに参加後の、成長著しいコルトレーンの姿を記録した貴重なアルバムである。ブルーノート唯一のリーダー作でもある本作は、サイドメンが充実し、３管編成の典型的なハード・バップに仕上がっている。曖昧なフレーズもなくなりバリバリと吹きまくるトレーンは、すでに東海岸の代表的なテナー・サックス奏者に成長し、自信に満ちたプレイを見せている。ブルー・トレインの単純なテーマからソロに入って一転、うねるようなアドリブで自在にブルースを音の織物にしていくコルトレーンの楽想は素晴らしく、５８年のソウル・トレインと並ぶ５０年代の金字塔であり、コルトレーン飛躍の記念碑アルバムとして絶対に欠かす事が出来ない。弱冠二十歳に満たない天才トランペッター、リー・モーガンも溌剌としたバイタルなプレイを聴かせ、カーティス・フラーが加わったフロント・ラインは重厚でアンサンブル的にも優れている。ジャケット・デザインがブルーノートらしく、かっこよく決まっている点も魅力だ。この後、再びマイルスのコンボに加入し、比類なきセクステットにおいてモード・ジャズの極点を目指し「マイルストーンズ」「カインド・オブ・ブルー」の吹込みへと続くのである。
