   史上最強のビッグ・バンド・ドラマー、バディ・リッチはハリー・ジェームス楽団から独立後の66年に念願だった自身のビッグ・バンドを結成した。そして若手を中心としたフレッシュなバンドを率い、同年秋にはハリウッドのシェズ・クラブに出演した。本作はその時の模様を鮮烈に記録した迫力満点のライヴ盤。ピアノがジョン・バンチ、ベースはカーソン・スミス、トランペットにボビー・シュー、サックスにジーン・クイルがいる以外は無名に近いメンバーばかりだが、とにかくこのバンドはドラマーが率先してバンドを鼓舞するから、とにかく威勢がよくてエキサイティング。その素晴らしさを最初に紹介したアルバムが本作だった。当時のポップ曲とスタンダードをエネルギッシュに演奏していて、とにかくカッコいい。ビル・ホルマン、フィル・ウィルソン、オリヴァー・ネルソン、ルイ・ベルソン、ジョン・ボイスらがアレンジを担当しており、アレンジの妙も聴きものだ。未発表曲が13曲も追加されているのも魅力。（市川正二）

　MURAKAMIっていう日本人がトランペットに居ることで話題になって、新宿の厚生年金へ聞きに行った記憶があります。このCDは「ウェストサイド」がすごく迫力満点でいいですね。全体的に軽い感じの曲が多くで思わず身体を動かしてしまいます。バディ・リッチのテクニックには驚くばかり、パワーフルなドラミングが印象的です。１９６６年にリリースされたCD とは思えないくらい今聞きいても楽しめますよ。
「インナメロトーン」は、ベイシーやエリントンで有名ですが、オリバーネルソンがアレンジしてこのCDでも聴くことが出来ます。初めて知ったのですがエリントンが作曲してるんですね。

ボビー･シューのソロプレイも光るバディ・リッチのビッグ・バンド・アルバム。ボーナス・トラックがたくさん入っていて、ライヴ演奏も聴くことが出来、大満足！
スピーディーな「Sister Sadie」、「Chicago」のノリのよさなど、バディ・リッチの小気味良いドラミングは最高です！

5.0 out of 5 stars ビッグバンドジャズの改革となったアルバム, 2004/6/18
このアルバムが発売されたのは、たしか1967年だったと思います。このアルバムを聴いたときの衝撃と感激を今でも忘れません。それまでスタン・ケントン楽団とかウディー･ハーマン楽団などで、結構モダンなサウンドやリズムを駆使していましたが、当時このバディ･リッチ楽団は、プレーヤーがバリバリの若手ばかりでエネルギッシュなモダンなアレンジを施し、全く新しいスタイルのビッグバンド・ミュージックを作り上げました。バディ･リッチが1988年に亡くなるまで、ビッグバンドの経営を継続できたのは、このアルバムでのデビュー（実際には、これ以前にサミー・デイビスJRのバックで録音したアルバムが出ていますが）の成功が大きなパワーになっていたと思います。ウェストサイド・ストーリー・メドレーはこの楽団の最もヒットした曲で、リッチはこの曲だけは誰にも演奏させないキマリとなったと聞いています。ベイシカリー・ブルースはボーカルグループのRitzが丸々コピーしてボーカリーズしました。是非聞いてみてください。それまでは、日本の学生ビッグバンドはもっぱらカウント・ベイシー楽団のコピーをしていましたが、このアルバムが出てからは、バディ･リッチ楽団が良いお手本となって、盛んに取り上げられるようになりました。そんなエポックメイキングなアルバムです。
