【チェット・ベイカー】
1929年オクラホマ州イェール生まれ。1952年にチャーリー・パーカーのグループに加わり頭角を現す。1954年にレコーディングされた「チェット・ベイカー・アンド・シングス」でその人気を不動にした。アート・ペッパーやジェリー・マリガンらといわゆるウェスト・コースト・ブームを巻き起こし、朝鮮戦争の好景気に後押しされ、チェットら西海岸派は隆盛を極めた。度重なる麻薬トラブルに見舞われイタリアで投獄生活を味わうも、その人気は衰える事がなく、1950年代から常に第一線で活躍しキャリア後期の作品も味わい深い録音が多い。1986年には日本のファンが長年待ち望んでいた初来日を果たすも1988年、オランダで客死。

このシワシワの顔を見よ。
放蕩な人生の疲れの顔。
かつての色男、マイルスと二分するトランペットの天才。
このアルバムは1988年に非業の死を遂げる2週間前の貴重な音の記録だ。
いつものように淡々と My Funny Valentine を唄う。
弱々しいトランペットの音色は哀れというよりむなしさが漂う。
天才とはこういう精神の狭間で生きる人生なのだろうか（青木高見）

なにしろジャケットがひどい。老醜をさらした、かつての美男チェット。制作したエンヤ・レコードのセンスを疑う。まるで、年老いたチンパンジーのようだ。とりわけ、美女がしなだれかかるリバーサイド盤のアルバム「チェット」を横に置くと無残さが増す。で、５９歳の１９８８年の録音だが、出来はひどい。ビッグ・バンドというかオーケストラを従えて、なんとかごまかしているが、衰えは隠せない。２曲目の「マイ・ファニー・ヴァレンタイン」は傑作アルバム「チェット・シングス」の声の艶、色気の片鱗すらない。トランペットの音の弱々しさもバックのビッグ・バンドの音でごまかしている。やっと４曲目の「サマータイム」でほんの少し精気を取り戻す。観客はノスタルジーに浸り、「生チェット」に拍手を送るのが、いっそう痛々しい。この録音の２週間後、ヤクのやりすぎで、ホテルのベランダから転落。チェットは５９歳の人生を終える。出来は１つ星だが、サマータイムでの精いっぱいの演奏とラスト・アルバムなので２つ星とする。（松本敏之）
