ソ連生まれのヴァイオリニスト、シトコヴェツキーが、グレン・グールドの
「ゴールトベルク変奏曲」を聴いて感動し、弦楽三重奏用に編曲したのは、
もう二十年以上も前のことです。この初演版ＣＤでチェロを担当していたマイスキーは、
２００６年、ジュリアン・ラクリン、今井信子とともに、再び弦楽三重奏版
「ゴールトベルク」に挑戦しました。

このシトコヴェツキーによる初演盤には「グレン・グールドを偲んで」と記されています。
演奏そのものも、グレン・グールドの疾走感や構成力を思わせるすばらしいものです。
たとえば、ＣＤでは、１曲目がアリアですが、２曲目には第１〜３変奏がひとつに
まとめられ、３曲目には第４〜６変奏がまとめられています。これによって、
変奏から変奏へ移るタイミングまで、緻密にコントロールされているのです。
（以前出ていたグールド盤ＣＤでは、３２曲が１曲扱いされていました）
特筆すべきは、シトコヴェツキーが、ふだん使っているストラディヴァリではなく、
グァダニーニを使用していることです。これにより、ヴァイオリンが目立ちすぎる
ことなく、まるでひとつの楽器で演奏しているかのような統一感が得られています。
「ゴールトベルク」は、チェンバロ、ピアノ以外にも、編曲されていくつかの楽器で
演奏されていますし、シトコヴェツキーによる弦楽合奏版もあります。
しかし、このオルフェオ盤は、そうした編曲版のなかでもとくにすぐれた内容のものだと
思います。グールドの演奏が好きな方なら、きっと気に入っていただけるでしょう。

　ゴルドベルグ変奏曲を弦楽器で演奏したアルバムである。

　数あるバッハの曲で　もっとも色々な演奏がなされ　かつ　アルバム化されている曲というと　ゴルドベルグ変奏曲を超えるものを中々思いつけない。ブランデンブルグや　マタイなども　それなりに　色々な種類は出ているとは思うが　ゴルドベルグ変奏曲に比較すると　はるかに少ないのではなかろうか。

　まず演奏家にとって　挑戦したくなる曲であることは　間違いないであろう。長さも手頃であり　一人で演奏出来る作品であるという「手軽さ」もあるのかもしれない。
　但し　やはり　グールドという稀有のピアニストが　１９５５年という段階で　伝説的な演奏をしてしまったという点が大きいと思う。グールド以降の演奏家は　グールドの１９５５年の演奏を目指し、対抗し、打倒する為に　自分自身のゴルドベルグ変奏曲を追求しているような気がしてならない。これはグールド自身もそうであった気がする。でなければ　二回目の録音もやらなかったのではなかろうか。

　さて弦楽器でのゴルドベルグ変奏曲はいかがなものか。結論的に言うと　非常に「ノリ」の良い演奏だと聴いた。メリハリが効いていてい　時にはジャズのスイングに近いテンポを感じる。弦楽器ならではの「音の立ち」もある。
　その分「深み」に欠けると聴く人もいるかもしれないが　バッハの音楽は「精神性」ばかりを聴き込もうとすると　時として　大きなものを聴き逃すような気もしている。それだけ　演奏する方にしても　聴く方にしても「自由度」を与えているからこそ　バッハに今なお　現代性があり　多くの演奏家がゴルドベルグ変奏曲を演奏するのだ。
