60年代モダン・ブルース史上最高のライヴ録音作と呼ばれるマジック・サムの歴史的名盤。1969年のアン・アーバー、63~64年のシカゴのゲットー・バーにおける実況録音。

'69年に３２歳の若さで急逝した彼の絶頂期を捉えたライブ盤。(1)から(9)まではシカゴのウエストサイドにあるAlexというクラブで'63年と'64年に録音されたまの。後半は'69年のAnn Arbor Blues Festivalでのライブ。録音状態は良くないが（特に前半のクラブで録音したもの）１曲目を聞いた途端に、そんな事は全く気にならない位、ブル-ズの神髄と彼の残した偉大な遺産に圧倒され最後まで一気に聞いてしまう。'63年録音には５人編成、'64年のもは４人編成だが、Blues FestivalではドラムスにあのSam Layをいれてのトリオ編成となっている。とても３人で演奏しているとは思えない程の音の厚みを感じる。彼の功績は幾つか挙げられるが、一つには当時（'60年代初頭)のマディをはじめとするシカゴブル-ズとB.B系のモダンブル-ズとの結合がある。その成果が見事に結実した姿が捉えられたライブ盤である。ただこのDelmark盤は以前P-Vineから出されたものと比べると３曲少ないのが玉に瑕。しかしブル-ズファン必携のアルバムである。

マジック・サムの気合いの入りまくったライブ版。
ここまで来ると音が悪くてもどうでもいい感じになってきます。
そんなことが気にならなくなるぐらいい凄い演奏。
これを聴かずしてブルース語ることなかれ的なアルバムなのでは。
ロバジョンのカバーのスウィートホームシカゴこれ以上かっこいい演奏を僕は知りません。
是非是非聴いてほしいと思います。

~昔から噂になっていたのがアンアーバーでのトリオ演奏。マニアのあいだではひそかにダビングを重ねたテープが流布していた記憶がある。確か正式盤として出たのは日本盤が初ではなかったかな。二枚組ＬＰとして発売され（おまけシングル「キャメル・ウォーク」つき）、たいへん話題になったのを覚えています。確かに音はいいとは言えませんが、オーディオマニ~~ア的な聞き方をしていると本質を見失います。これで悪いとか言ってたら、ヤズーとかのカントリーブルースなんか聞けませんって。ブギに関して言えば、いやあ、もうドライブ感なんてものではなく、これは「ドライブ」そのもの！？~
