チャーリー・ヘイデンのゴンサロ・ルバルカバとポール・モチアンによるモントリオールでの89年のライヴ盤である。地味なアルバム・ジャケットである。しかし内容がすばらしい。この地味なアルバム・ジャケットのCDを何かの理由で所有していた僕はとてもラッキーであったと言える。すばらしいアルバムはどこで巡り会うかわからない。 アルバムの冒頭を飾るのは、ゴンサロの静かなソロから始まるゲイリー・ピーコック作のVignette 。こんな美しい曲をこんなにも美しくリリカルに情熱的に弾くなんてゴンサロはすごい。ヘイデンのベースもシビれるが、モチアンの緩急をつけるゴンサロとつばぜり合いをするかのようなハイハット・ワークも聴き入ってしまう。美しさでは3曲目のLA PASIONARIAもひけをとらない。流れるような美しいフレーズ。たまらん。4曲目のスロー・テンポのSILENCEにもうっとり。僕がこのアルバムを購入した当初はゴンサロを固いピアノの音で恐ろしくフレーズを速く弾く男くらいの印象しかなく、ほとんど聴くことがなかった。リラックスしない音はピアノにあらずというわけだったのだ。ところが今聴くとこれがいいのだ。恐ろしく速く弾くフレーズは美しさを表現するパッションだったのだ。ゴンサロのピアノ・プレイの中では僕はこのアルバムが一番好きだ。他のソロ名義のアルバムはラテン色が強くて、やや閉口してしまうところがあるが(好きな人、ごめんなさい。)、ヘイデンをリーダーとするこのアルバムは音楽的にもバランスがとれていて聴きやすいし、このクォリティの高さは、巷にあるそれらしいピアノ・トリオ・アルバムを寄せつけない凄みがある。僕のコレクションの中でもひときわその存在感を示すベスト・アルバムである。
