That's her real name and this is her real voice, as fresh and sweet as the darling buds of May--but never cloying or precious. Fittingly, there's a bright, springtime theme running through this record, which includes "It Might as Well Be Spring," "A Fine Spring Morning," and the CD bonus track "They Say It's Spring." And since Ms. Dearie had recently returned from a few years in France in 1956 when she recorded this, her first U.S. album, there are also some chansons in zee language of love: "Comment Allez Vous," "Tout Doucement," and the aforementioned "It Might As Well Be Printemps." The only thing missing is "April in Paris." Dearie accompanies herself on piano, with Ray Brown (bass) and Jo Jones (drums)--and on some tracks a six-voice chorus. If Chet Baker and Betty Boop had a baby, she'd be Blossom Dearie--and this first-rate album catches her in the springtime of her career. --Jim Emerson

ＣＤジャケットのブロッサム・ディアリーは、美貌の学校の先生という雰囲気を漂わせていますが、その歌唱振りは女性特有の魅力を倍化しており、その外見とのギャップの大きさと珍しいキュートな声質に惹きこまれました。1956年9月の収録ですから、半世紀前の録音ということになりますが、今でもその不思議な歌唱の魅力は健在です。

彼女は、ピアノを演奏しながら歌唱するという所謂弾き語りですが、ピアノもヴォーカルも安定していて聞き惚れしました。5曲目の「モア・ザン・ユー・ノウ」は、歌なしの演奏ですが、見事なバラード・プレイですし、とてもリリカルなピアノでした。ベースがレイ・ブラウンですので、そのサポート振りも見事です。

6曲目の「ザウ・スウェル」、7曲目の「春の如く」と続くところが最高です。この有名なスタンダード・ナンバーを、鼻にかかったようなスウィート・ヴォイスで軽やかに華やかに歌いまわしています。スウィングする楽しみをリスナーに届けてくれました。

特に、オスカー・ハマースタイン2世の代表曲のひとつ「春の如く」をステキなフランス語で歌っています。けだるい雰囲気が漂い、小粋であり官能的でも歌い方がいいですね。このアルバムが半世紀もの長い間、聴き継がれる理由を感じ取りました。

ブロッサム・ディアリーは、1952年にパリに渡り、クラブで歌ったり、ザ・ブルースターズというモダンなコーラス・グループで活躍したりしています。父親はスコットランド人の血をひいており、母親はノルウェー人、結婚相手のフルート奏者ボビー・ジャスパーはベルギー生まれという係累と環境が、ヨーロッパの魅力をたたえたアメリカのジャズ・ヴォーカリストという特異なポジションを占めたのだと思います。

ブロッサム・ディアリーの定番アルバム。1952‐55年のパリ修行直後の1956年9月録音。パリで彼女が関わって結成されたフレンチ・コーラスグループ｢ブルー・スターズ(of France)｣参加の余韻というか、引き継いでるようにきこえる。｢フランスかぶれ｣ともいえるけど、後に多くのアルバムを出してる中でこのアルバムほど小粋でエスプリ香がバランスよく漂ってるのはないのでは、そういう意味でも貴重で魅力的だと思う。興味ある方は｢ブルー・スターズ｣も一聴オススメ。ちなみに｢ブルー・スターズ｣には人気の男性弾き語り歌手・ボブ・ドローもその結成に関わっており、ボブ・ドローのよく知られたアルバム｢デビル・メイ・ケア｣はなんと同じ1956年の10月録音。つまり2人ともパリの｢ブルー・スターズ｣参加後、同じ年にアメリカ帰国して代表するアルバムを出してるという偶然。ブロッサム・ディアリーとボブ・ドローは1970年代のABCテレビ番組｢スクールハウス・ロック｣の音楽で共演もしてるし、小粋な弾き語り歌手つながり？。。。更に｢スクールハウス・ロック(Multiplication Rock)｣のアルバムジャケには、これまた粋なジャズ・コーラス・グループ・ランバート，ヘンドリックス＆ロスのロス(アニー=ロス)が賛辞を寄せてるということで、やっぱ類は友を呼ぶのかも。

なんか、ジャズきいてみた~い！っていう人にはとりあえずいいのではないでしょうか~。（笑）すごく入りやすくて心地よくって。とくに、女性向き！！こういう音楽が部屋に流れていると、自分がとてもカワイイ女になれそうな気がしてきますね。自分の心の奥のほうにある、やわらかくて甘い部分を前のほうにもってきてくれるみたい。日々のあれこれでささくれてひっこんでしまっているけど。。
それはブロッサムの、繊細なささやくような声が、シンプルなピアノの伴奏でくっきりと際立っているからです。
シンプルは素晴らしい。
敏感な感性を大事にしたいから、たまにはこんな音楽を聴きましょ！
