   ビル・エヴァンスは、この時代では珍しく、56年のデビューアルバムからソロピアノ演奏を録音している。69年にはソロピアノのフルアルバムをリリース。ジャズスタンダードというより、ポップなナンバーを弾く。
   アナログLP時代には、B面すべてを占める14分にも及ぶ『ネヴァー・レット・ミー・ゴー』に驚かされた。前衛でもないソロ演奏が10分以上続くのは異例であるが、エヴァンスの演奏に難解なところはない。共演者がおらず、事前に打ち合わせする必要のないソロ演奏だからこそ、気分次第で演奏を続けることも可能だ。
   途中でテンポやリズムパターンを変える、Key（調性）を変えるといったことも思いのままである。イメージがいろいろ広がり、そのために演奏時間が長くなる。それまでの常識では考えられなかったアルバムだが、内容のすばらしさでグラミー賞では最優秀ソロイスト賞を獲得する。（高木宏真）

最初、このアルバムを買った時結構ノイズが気になって仕方がなかった。後になって高音質版（ボーナストラックたくさん入ってる）が出たので買ってみた。でも、高音質版は何かが”違った”。確かに音は良くなったのだけど、余計（と思われる）なボーナストラックがアルバム全体のバランスを崩してしまったように思える。 このオリジナル版は曲数も控えめで、全体を通してリラックスして聞ける。そうした意味でも、このオリジナル版は高音質版よりもGoodなのです。

Verveに残された『Bill Evans Alone』は、ビル・エヴァンスのピアニストとしての最大の特徴であるリリカルな音楽性を如何なく発揮したアルバムです。

１曲目の「Here's That Rainy Day」からいきなりエヴァンスの美しいピアノの世界にいざなってくれます。深く静かに、自分の心の中を見つめながらピアノの鍵盤をさぐるような感じがとても好きですね。心の揺れをスウィングするピアノで表現できる稀有なピアニストだとも思います。

２曲目の「A Time For Love」の演奏のように、時折音の密度を少なくし、静寂をもたらすことで、余韻と抒情が生まれます。決して全ての音符を隙間なく埋め尽すような演奏はしませんので、その辺りをテンポ・ルバートする奏法が個性を際立たせているのでしょう。
「Midnight Mood」の温かいスウィング感も好きです。このような軽快さもまた彼の演奏スタイルの魅力だと言えるでしょう。

１４分以上演奏する「Never Let Me Go」はソロ・インプロヴィゼーションの中でも一際評価されている曲です。
内省的で陰影に富み、心の趣くままテンポを揺らし、様々なメロディとハーモニーを紡いでゆき、大きな音楽のまとまりとして提示した演奏です。彼の才能の煌きを最大限に発揮したソロだと言えますね。
演奏と共に少しずつノッてきたのでしょう。饒舌なピアノは熱を帯びてきます。何度聴いても素晴らしいとしか言いようのない演奏ですね。

一言で言えば「物凄く良い」につきる。
まずもって一曲目にきている「Here's That Rainy Day」。
私はこの曲を別のCDで聴いたがためにこのCDを購入するに至ったのだけれども、
これを聴くと午後のマンハッタンとそこに降る雨が見えるような気さえする。

他の曲は私は一曲目ほどには特別なイメージを抱かなかったのだが、
それでも何十回、何百回とMDで聴いているのに、放り出す気がしない。
落ち着いた雰囲気、零れ落ちる美しい音。
もはや録音のレトロな雰囲気ですら重要な演出としてあるかのように思える。

ジャズに縁の無い方にも聴いて欲しい名盤である。
