Wes Montgomery brought the art of the electric guitar to new heights in the 1950s and 1960s before his untimely death at 43. His vaulting style employed octaves much as his main influence, Charlie Christian, did in the Benny Goodman Sextet. Montgomery's crowd-pleasing facility with the fretboard was best employed in live performance when he could stretch out and really be heard. Smokin' is a thoroughly satisfying live album recorded in 1965 and 1966 at the New York nightclub, with co-leader Wynton Kelly and his trio--Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Montgomery and Kelly are in perfect sync here, especially on "No Blues" and "If You Could See Me Now." --John Swenson

ウエスの"Halfnote"でのライブは、ジャズ・ファンだけではなく他のジャンルでも、ギターの好きな方にもお勧めです。1曲目の"No　Blues"でのウエスの"オクターブ奏法"は驚きのテクニック！連発で、ピアノのウイントン・ケリーも自分のソロを忘れて、聴きほれています。ケリーのソロが思い出したように出てくる所も聴きでしょう！"Four　On　Six"での、ウエスのクールなブルース感も最高です。あまり多くは書きません。有名すぎる伝説のギター・アルバムですから。"No　Blues"でノック・アウトをされてみて下さい！

ウェスモンゴメリーのベストアルバムは？というと「インクレディブルジャズギター」「フルハウス」というのが巷での定番。
しかし、多くのジャズギタリスト（プロであれアマチュアであれ）は「最高傑作は　Smokin' at the Half Note だよ！」である。このアルバムはウィントンケリーのアルバムという位置付けであるが、これは紛れもなく「ウェスモンゴメリーのアルバム」であり。「グルーブ感・タイム感、メロディックなフレージング、全体の構成力、爆発力」が全て揃った、ウェスの最高傑作である。
現代のギタリスト（メセニー、ジョンスコ、フリゼール、アバークロンビーetc.）で。このルバムを踏襲していないプレイヤーはいない。買って損なし、ギタリストであれば持っていて「当たり前」のアルバムだ。

　ウェスを聞くならライブ盤。彼は，ライブでこそ本当の実力を発揮する。本作品は、数少ない彼のライブ録音のなかでもトップクラスの作品だ。NO BluesやFor on Sixではグローヴィー、スピーディーなサウンドを繰り出し、一方でIf You Could See Me Nowではメロウなサウンドでバラードを聞かせてくれる。

　また、このアルバムのもうひとつの聞き所は、ウィルトン・ケリーとの絶妙なコンビネーションだ。ウィルトンの天性のリズム感を生かしたスウィンギーで迫力のあるタッチによりウェスのギターはいっそう盛り上がる。
　まず聞くべし。必聴の一枚。
