ビル･エバンスと言えば、やはりスコット･ラファロとやっていた頃の"RIVERSIDE"の初期の作品が有名で、評価も高いし、人気もあります。確かにこの頃の輝きは後にも先にもありません。サイドメンとして参加しているものには、これ等に比肩するものはありますが、本人名義のアルバムでは、確かに、これ等に尽きてしまうという感じがします。
しかしアルバムとしての完成度を別にすると、ピアニストとしてのビル･エバンスはこれ等のアルバムで尽きてしまった訳ではありません。その意味では、企画物っぽい"VERVE"時代のものも捨てがたいものがあります。とは言え、"VERVE"のものはどのアルバムを買えばいいのか迷ってしまいます。そんな人にお勧めのアルバムです。やはりビル･エバンスは何やっても、ビル･エバンスです。
一曲目の「スパルタカス、愛のテーマ」はスタンリー･キューブリックの映画「スパルタカス」のためにアレックス･ノースが書いた曲です。サンタナが"SWING OF DELIGHT"でも取り上げていましたが、やはりビル･エバンスがやると違います。こんなにいい曲だとは思いませんでした。

リバーサイドからヴァーヴに移籍してエヴァンスは変わった。リバーサイド後期はスコットラファロを失った痛手から回復できず、マンネリに陥っていた。ヴァーヴに移ってからは、プロデューサーのクリードテイラーの手腕にもより、ピアノトリオというフォーマット以外での録音が増え、エヴァンスのレコーディングアーティストとしての厚みが出た時期であった。
このコンピはそんな時代からのセレクトとなっていて、変化に富んだ構成（ピアノソロ、一人二重奏、三重奏、オーケストラとの共演、フルート奏者の参加、ライブ演奏）となっていて飽きさせられることがない。曲順も素晴らしく一曲一曲にオリジナル盤とは違う魅力を発見できるはずだ。エヴァンス初心者から、上級者の方まで満足させる内容のコンピである。同じくヴァーヴからのコンピ"The Best Of Bill Evans Live"と併せてエヴァンス者必携のシロモノである。
