Charlie Parker welcomed the opportunity to record standards with a small string ensemble in 1949, and the results are stunning, his liquid alto soaring over the tuneful and only occasionally stiff arrangements. Along the way, he invests tunes like "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" and "Laura" with a unique blend of bluesy realism and mercurial improvisation. The CD adds live versions from a Carnegie Hall concert, and there are also two brilliant versions of Neal Hefti's "Repetition." バードのソロがたっぷりと聴ける。ウィズストリングスなので、他のメンツのソロが少ない分だけ彼のソロが浮き彫りになってる。そこがいいんだよね。ぶっとい音でばりばり言いたいことをしゃべりまくって終わりという感じ。スリングスアレンジは一般に言われているほど悪いとは思いませんね。かえってパーカーを引き立てるように編曲されている気がします。これはコンプリートなんでカーネギーホールでのライブ演奏なんか入ってて現場の空気感が伝わってきて良いです。同じ曲でもなにしろパーカーなので全然違った演奏で素敵です。

1930年代~1940年代のスタンダードナンバーを、パーカーが自在に解釈して吹きまくった素晴らしい音源……と褒め称えてから、ストリングス入りな事とそのアレなアレンジをこき下ろすのがこのアルバムに対する「お約束」の評価のようです（それ自体実にマンネリで通り一遍な評価だが）。バードのプレイはまったくもって5つ星、それはここではおいといて。
往年のマントヴァーニの豪奢さとはほど遠いですが、まがりなりにもアコースティックなストリングスオケで、近年のイージーリスニング系のように半端なエレクトリックが入って却ってチープになってるのとは訳が違う。
ジミー・キャロルなる人物が問題のアレンジャーで、このアルバムのブックレットにも写真が載ってますが、エルキュール・ポワロみたいなハゲと髭の人ですね。当時はそれなりに実績はあった人なんでしょう。あの時代（1950年頃）は、こんなベタなアレンジのムード音楽が受けていたんだろうと思います。確かに結構頑張ってはいるんですよ、ジミーおじさん。ちとチープな瞬間もあるけれど。
その時代毎のムード音楽・イージーリスニングは、薄っぺらい消耗品としてハイブラウな人々からは軽んじられ、大衆からも一瞬のうちに忘れ去られる、ジャズ以上にはかない存在でした。今の日本ではいっときあれだけ売れたポール・モーリアやクレイダーマンだって過去の人なのであって、50ウン年前のムード音楽音源なんてどうやって入手すればいいのかも想像が付かない。バードの音源なんていくらでも売ってますが、ジミー・キャロルアレンジのムードオケなんてまず無いです。そう、実はこのアルバム、「ジミー・キャロル・オーケストラ（？）」にバードが客演している貴重なアルバムなのです、というのは冗談ですが、いっそバードの生きた時代をしのんで、そのくらいの聴き方をするのも一つの楽しみ方かも知れません。

　パーカー作品の中でおそらく最も聴き易く、且つ実際に最もよく聴かれているであろうアルバム。

　どうしましょう、これは。いや、バックのストリングスの事なんですが。よりポピュラーな人気を獲得しようと、パーカー自身の企画で録音されたそうですが。ムード・ミュージックですかね、要するにこれは。ムード・ミュージックを馬鹿にするつもりはないですが‥‥。

　然し、その中で鳴っているパーカーのプレイにフォーカスを絞って聴くと、これは凄い。朗々と歌い上げる艶やかな音色、スムーズ極まりないフレージング、アドリブを最小限に抑えながらも、鳴り響く圧倒的な存在感。数あるパーカー作品の中でも、このアルバムをフェイバリットとして挙げるファン、或いはミュージシャンが少なくないのも??けます。ストリングスの陳腐さとある意味絶妙な対比となって、パーカーの美しさ、匂い立つ高貴さが際立っているのです。因みに、日本が世界に誇るアルト奏者、渡辺貞夫氏は、ここでのパーカーから非常に大きな感銘を受けたそうです。
　尚、ストリングス入りのパーカーのアルバムは複数ありますが、まとめて聴けるこのアルバムはお得。
