Although "it put my kids through college", by 1967 Stan Getz was heartily sick of the bossa nova craze he had headed during the 1960s.
Sweet Rain, one of his most tasteful albums, was his answer to it. It is one of his most inventive and lyrical and his interpretation of the title track, a composition by the young composer Michael Gibbs, is one of his outstanding performances on record. The programme is by a new quartet with pianist Chick Corea, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Grady Tate. Getz himself, 40 at the time of the recording, always looked for young musicians with something unique to contribute. Corea was his replacement in the quartet for Gary Burton, another inventive musician. Corea wrote "Litha", a challenging but melodic piece with changing tempos and "Windows", a delicate waltz. His piano solos flow with great beauty and his accompaniment for the tenor seems telepathic. Getz takes advantage of this and some of his deepest inventions on record are the result. Even the one concession to the bossa nova, Jobim's "O Grande Amore" rises above the genre with this powerful and yet delicate interpretation. --
