   54年にLAで旗揚げしたクリフォード・ブラウン~マックス・ローチ・クインテットは、56年にブラウンが自動車事故で急死したため、活動期間は短かったものの、50年代を代表する名コンボとして後世に語り継がれている。無類の歌心を持ったトランペッターと音楽性豊かなドラマーの組み合わせは、相性も抜群、ハードバップの魅力を存分に聴かせてくれる。このバンドに関しては、どのアルバムも素晴らしいのだが、本作または『Clifford Brown & Max Roach』からスタートするのが順当だろう。

   本作は55年2月のセッションで統一されているところがいい。< 1 >「Cherokee」はインディアンの太鼓を模したローチのドラミングがユニーク。エリントン・ナンバーの< 9 >「Take the "A" Train」は列車が出発する様子、ハーレムに到着する様子を再現していて、思わずニヤリだ。それにしてもブラウンのソロは圧倒的。トランペット本来のブリリアントな音色といい、ひらめきに富んだソロといい、背筋がゾクゾクしてくるほど興奮する。天才トランペッターとは、まさにこの人のことだ。（市川正二）

クリフォード.ブラウンのプレイはファッツ.,ナヴァロ直系で、明朗で非常によく歌うもので、ジャズトランペット吹きの多くが理想的なプレイヤーと挙げる名手であることは今更説明不要だろう。本作はそんな彼の作品の中でも最も完成度が高く、人気のある作品である。オープニングのチェロキーからエンディングのA Trainまで、一気呵成に聴けてしまう。そこには、マイルスやドーハムのような陰影は全くなく、ただただ吹くことが楽しくて仕方ないという雰囲気に満ちている。5人全員が楽しんで演奏している感じがありありと伝わってくるのだ。ジャズトランペットのアルバムとしてだけでなく、ジャズの名盤として十指にかならず入ってくるであろう名盤です。

1955年2月23-25日録音。パーソナルは、クリフォード・ブラウン(tp)、マックス・ローチ(ds)、ハロルド・ランド(ts)、ジョージ・モロウ(b)、リッチィー・パウエル(p)。メンバーの息のあいかたが尋常ではない。

ぼくはこのアルバム、後ろに行くほど好きだ。『George's Dilemma』のマックス・ローチのシンバルの鳴り方あたりから、メンバーがジャズを演奏するのがこの上なく愉しい、と言いたそうな演奏になってくる。特に最後の2曲、『If I Love Again』と『Take The 'A' Train』が素晴らしい。『Take The 'A' Train』の列車を模したような演奏や展開の素晴らしさ、そしてジャズを演ずる愉しさが伝わってくる。

マイルスの暗いペットもいいが、いつも暖かいハートに満ちたクリフォード・ブラウンのペットも捨てがたい。ジャズの幸せがいっぱいだ。

個人的には、ブラウン＝ローチ双頭コンボの諸作と54年のバードランドのアート・ブレイキーとの共演盤を比較した場合、後者のライブが好きだ。これは内容云々というより、その記録から伝わってくる熱と臨場感、音の質のような漠然としたものでうまく説明ができない。もちろん音楽性やグループとしてのまとまりなどに関してはブラウン＝ローチに軍配が上がることは否定しようがないであろうが。スタディ・イン・ブラウンはそんな中でもかなりできのいいアルバムである。「チェロキー」に始まり、「A列車で行こう」といったスタンダードをはじめとする名演オン・パレードである。特に「ジョージズ・ジレンマ」や「サンデュ」などは記憶に残る素晴らしい演奏である。ブラウンのトランペットは音色、アタック、フレージング、メロディーラインの構成など、どれをとっても完璧なもので、天才の名をほしいままにしている。アドリブに関していえば当時のマイルスがどう転んでも勝ち目はない。マイルスはブラウンという太陽のような資質を持った天才の存在で、月のようなマイナーで静かなジャズへ自閉するしかなかったのであろう。ただし僕は、両者の音楽家としての総合力においてマイルスが上回り、ブラウンはまだ、その素質を外に向かって開放しただけで、本格的な彼の音楽世界の構築する前に、この世を去ってしまったと思っている。このアルバムでも、様々な曲を見事に演じきっているが、絵画でいえば珠玉の小品を（それも文字通り習作として）残し、本格的な問題作、大作に至らぬままであったといえよう。アドリブは完璧であったが、開放系のブラウンの世界しか垣間見ることができないのだ。マイルスのように自閉＝醸成にいたっていないのだ。それが贅沢な、ないものねだりと百も承知だが、素晴らしいアルバムだけにブラウン＝ローチ・コーポレイテッドの成果を評価しつつも、その部分の苛立ちを余計に感じてしまう。
