　ル・フレムは1891年に生まれ，1984年に没した作曲家。現在では殆ど省みられることがなく，世界中を見渡しても，作品集は４種類しか存在しない。

　新旧のパラダイムが激しくせめぎ合った19世紀末のパリ。ドビュッシー，ラヴェルら新世代の推し進める革新的な音楽表現が，いわゆるロマン派長老の牛耳ってきた楽壇に風穴を空けつつあった。作曲を志す者は否応なくその渦中に飲み込まれていった。パリは，互いの覇権を賭けた天下分け目の関ヶ原と化していたのである。

　その中にあって，敢えて中央の覇権争いに背を向け，野に下った作曲家たちの一群。その中にフレムの姿もあった。彼らにとり，革新者たちの語法が魅力的だったのは，あくまでそれが，各地に残る郷土の音楽的遺産（民謡）のクラシックへの導入を可能にするからであった。長い宮廷音楽としての歴史の中で，すっかり民衆から乖離してしまったクラシック。それを今一度ルーツと結びつけることが，彼ら「穏健なモダニスト」の目論見だったのである。
　けばけばしいイデオロギー闘争の影に隠れ，彼らの作品は，現在でも充分な評価を得ているとは言い難い。しかし，時とともに評価の移ろう特定のイデオロギーに惑うことなく，音楽そのものの感動を探ろうとした真摯な態度が，彼らの音楽を得難いものにしている。

　フレムの音楽もまた，そうした美意識に溢れたものだ。フォレ「ドリー」やラヴェル「マ・メール・ロワ」に通じる飾らない叙情の中に，さりげなく旋法や非機能和声，平行和音が用いられ，ブルターニュの詩情が穏やかに香る。革新的でなくとも，音楽のもつ真摯さがここにはある。子を失った作曲者の厳かな悲哀が音符のはしばしから滲むかのような「死者のために」の深みはどうだろう。ラヴェルの「亡き王女のパヴァーヌ」と並べても遜色ないのではないか。
