The best English rock & roll has always been made by art students; this sometimes-pretentious, always-engaging foursome is no exception. Throbbing Gristle's unprecedented alignment of collage, propaganda, and noise even spawned an entire genre. This 1978 full-length (originally the third release on the group's Industrial label) was their uncharacteristically accessible electro-pop album. It's survived rather well--of note are the pleasantly monotonous, noisy synth-pop of "What a Day," the wholly improvised two-tracks of "Discipline," and the playful, ambient "Exotica," a tribute to Martin Denny that prefigures hipster cocktail culture by two decades. The group wasn't only boundary-pushing, they had a sense of humor (easily glimpsed in the cover art) that's sorely lacking in the industrial music created since Throbbing Gristle's demise in the late '70s. --Mike McGonigal

なんと再結成するというTGの代表作。非常にアヴァンギャルドな作風なので、聴くのにも気合いが必要ですが、本作が多分一番聴きやすいので、初めての方は、本盤からチャレンジしてください(w
TG自体の活動は短命に終わりましたが、メンバーはサイキックTV、クリス＆コージーとして活動を続け、初期インダストリアル・ミュージックに大きな影響をあたえました。

ジェネシス・P・オリッジの強烈なキャラクターも実に印象的でしたよ。

ちなみにこのアルバムのタイトル[20 Jazz Funk Greats]は、ジェネシスの「これからはジャズ・ファンクが絶対流行る」という予言(?)からつけられたとか(ちなみに当時はジャズ・ファンクなんか全く流行っていなかった)。
この10年後くらいにACID JAZZなんかが流行ったとき、「うわっ、ホントにジャズ・ファンクがきちゃったよ！」と思いましたね。

80年代はTGとかキャバレー・ヴォルテールなんかの実験的なバンドを「オルタナティヴ」と称していましたね。ニルヴァーナ以降意味が変わってしまいましたが。

約２５年前に日本盤ＬＰを買って持っているのですが、ジャケ・オビを見たところでも、海のものだか山のものだかも判らず、実は本当にジャケットに騙されて購入してしまったのです。聞いてビックリ、どこがjazzfunk？という状態でした（このページ見ている人はそもそもご存知でしょうが）。よくよく見るとjazzfunkやるにしては目が据わってる方々ばかりで、おかしいと思ったのですが…。このバンド以降、欧州オルターナティブ・ミュージックが一気に開花。以来、本当のジャズ＆フュージョンしか聞いていなかったのに、この時期、ほんのわずかの期間ですが、ＰＩＬやホルガー・チューカイ（ＣＡＮ）、ＤＡＦ、ア・サータン・レイシオ、アインシュトゥルツェンデ・ノイバウテン等々の音楽にはまってしまいましたが、そのきっかけをつくってくれた懐かしいアルバムです。ちなみにＴＧ（スロッビング・グリッスル）とは「脈打つ男根」という意味だそうです。ゲ~。

TGと言うバンドは80年ごろに暴れた「インダストリアル・ミュージック」の名づけ親かつ生みの親。
聴いたこと無い人は「インダストリアルもぐり」と言うことになるかと。（別にいいよな、そんなこと）
後にインダストリアルがハードなギターノイズヒロー見たいな定義になるとは知る由もない彼ら。

音は湿度が高くて温度が低い。明度が低くて彩度も低い。体力奪われる。とことん。
単調な工業社会でノイローゼにならないには意思の力が必要だということか。

難解と言うか・・完成度を気にしない人たちで、でもこの20 Jazz Funk Greats は完成度が高い分聞きやすい。
タイトル曲の「20 Jazz Funk Greats」は本当に Jazz でFunk でGreats！まず、ここから聴くのが良いかと。

ボーナストラックのDiscipline（１２インチで出ていたもの）もリズムが印象的な名曲。

ちなみに、もう一つの手としてベスト版という手もある。
こんなマニアックなバンドのベスト版はどうなんだ？と思う人もいるかも知れないが、意外に問題なく聴ける。
