インダストリアルの創始者としてカルト的な人気を誇るThrobbing Gristle
の事実上の1st Albumらしいです。
しかし始めて聴いた時「う~ん…」とちょっと考え込んでしまいました。
今までインダストリアルというジャンルに分類される音楽を大分聴いて来て、
総合的に見たそれと微妙に違っていたからです。
ダーク・アンビエント、ノイズ・エレクトロニカのように「毒」の如く精神に浸透していくスタイル。
己の精神のダークサイドを覗きこむという姿勢自体は、
後のインダストリアルに大きな影響をもたらしていると思いますが、
インダストリアルならではの“圧倒的な破壊力を持った音使い”
は後のアーティストによって確立されたのではと思います。

メタル・パーカッションを多用し、それを攻撃的なノイズと組み合わせたSPKやTest Dept、
EINSTUERZENDE NEUBAUTENらによって、
上記のような破壊的な音楽としてのインダストリアルが生まれたのでは無いかと思います。

また芸大出身のユニットということもあるためか、
極めて前衛的で直接的な表現はあまり見られなかったです。
はっきりと唄っているのは11．のみで、鬱の中の鬱と言わんばかりの不気味な静けさが続きます。
Skinny Puppyや現在のCMIレーベルにも通ずるこの音像は、万人にオススメすることは絶対に出来ませんが、
その強烈過ぎるドロドロ感を私は気に入りました。

長くなってスミマセン…

インダストリアルの始祖 Throbbing Gristleの実質的 1stアルバム。

今でこそインダストリアルというと、ハードロック的ギターリフに電気処理されたボーカルというスタイルで、ハードコア、ラウドロックのアプローチの一種みたいになってきてますが、このアルバムはそうゆうものではないです。

電気処理されたボーカルはメロディーを歌うよりは、表情もなく淡々と喋り続けたり、あるいは音の一種として使用されています。
リズムボックスやサウンドコラージュなどを好んで使い、ノイズをふんだんに放射する、ポップとは程遠いサウンドです。

初期のインダストリアルは、このアルバムのジャケットに掲げられた『INDUSTRIAL MUSIC FOR INDUSTRIAL PEOPLE』という言葉に象徴的で、そのグループの多くは音だけでなく、歌詞やジャケット、ライヴパフォーマンスに至るまで総合的な表現を好み、病んだ世界の告発にテーマを置いていました。

初期の代表チューン「ＳＬＵＧ　ＢＡＩＴ」、「ＺＹＣＬＯＮ　Ｂ　ＺＯＭＢＩＥ」、「ＵＮＩＴＥＤ」を含む名作、ジェネシス・Ｐ・オリッジのエロチックな変態声と、体中を虫が這い回っているかのような、気持ちの悪いエレクトロニクスこそがＴＧの本領発揮だ。この作品は、ハマると、中毒ものだ。普通じゃない世界を覗いて見たい方におすすめ！
