   1994年のデビュー作『Dummy』でポーティスヘッドは、ターンテーブルをベースにしたソウルの名曲を作り上げたが、サウンドをあまりに徹底的に特徴づけたために模倣者を数多く生んでしまった。では続く2作目はどうすればいい？ 答えはいたって単純だ――元々のスタイルにさらに磨きをかければいい。

   このセルフタイトルの2作目では、陰鬱な緊迫感、ロマンチックな宿命論への傾倒といったデビュー作を特別なアルバムにしていた要素が、すべてグレードアップされた。ポーティスヘッドの音楽の多くは、映画的なセンスで構成されている。現に本作の多くのトラックは、1960年代中期の実存主義的なスパイ映画のBGMのように聞こえる。だが結局のところ彼らの最大の強みは、シンガーのベス・ギボンズにある。ギボンズのヴォーカルは怒り（「Cowboys」）からわびしさ（「Mourning Air」）まで、あふれる喜び（「All Mine」）から倦怠感（「Only You」）までを自在に歌い分け、そのすべてがバンドの意欲的で開放的なアレンジにぴったりはまっている。本作は荘厳でありながら酔いどれた、何度となく震撼させられる傑作だ。（Andrew McGuire, Amazon.co.uk）

ひたすらダークなポーティスヘッドの２nd。基本的には１枚目を踏襲した作りだが、やはりこの人たちの唯一無二の世界は健在。サウンドの下敷きはクラブサウンドであるにもかかわらず、踊る要素を徹底的に排除。こんなサウンドは聞いたことがない。ボーカルの表情もぞくぞくする感じだし、異常なまでにこのサウンドとボーカルとの統一感がある。９７年発表作でも古臭さは皆無。これぞプログレッシブサウンド。

　ポーティスヘッドはコンピュータやDJ手法など最新技術を前面に押し出した音作りをしているバンドである。似たようなバンドはたくさんあるが、彼らの特徴はその最新技術があくまで音楽を美しく奏でるために使われていることである。ぺしゃっとしたスネアの音や、曲を切り刻むようなスクラッチ音やヒステリックに聴こえる少女性をおびた声など、計算しつくされた世界である。美しいクラシックや、前衛的なジャズをきいたあとのような充実感が得られるアルバムである。

ああぁーこの鬱々とした世界観・・・
僕は好きです
一人部屋を暗くして、酒とタバコを楽しみながらヴォーカルの気だるさを感じる歌声にゆっくりと身を委ねたくなってきます
静かな夜、少し心を落ち着けたい時、聴いてみましょう
