オルタナティブというのは、厳密には特定の音楽様式を指す言葉ではなく、当時（80年代後半〜）アメリカで商業的に主流だったＬＡメタルやアメリカンハードロックのような体育会系のわかりやすいロックに対して“取って代わるもの”という意味で登場した、アンダーグラウンドなインディーズシーンに潜在的に存在していたある種ソフィスティケイトされたロックサウンドを指していました。そしてこのアルバムは、そんなオルタナティブロックをオーバーグラウンドに浮上させ、後のグランジムーヴメントのきっかけともなった記念碑的作品です。ただし、ソニックユースというバンドは他のオルタナバンドとは比較しようのない唯一無二なオリジナリティを持つバンドですし、ムーヴメントとは無関係にマイペースで独立独歩なバンドであるとも言えます。
吹き荒れる硬質でノイジーなギターリフに、ダウナーで陰鬱なメロディライン。そこに含まれる微量のポップネスが、サウンドの中毒性を増幅しています。決して聴きやすい作品ではないのですが（それでもソニックユースの作品の中ではかなりコマーシャルな方みたいですが）、むしろその難解な憂鬱さかげんがこの作品の魅力と言えるかもしれません。
そしてオルタナサウンドの特徴とも言えるあの突き放したようなクールネス。クールである＝暑苦しくないという点においては、まさにオルタナティブロックのお手本というべき１枚です。

最初から最後まで惜しみないほどの疾走感とギターノイズ。
｢カッコイイ｣の一言につきる。
どこかひねくれたポップさがあるのもこのバンドの持ち味かもしれない。
ジャケットも最高

このアルバムを聴くと、妙に懐かしくなってしまうのは私だけだろうか・・？いわば、こういった趣旨の音源が盛んになってきた時代の代表作として、メディアや雑誌が盛んに取り上げたのを覚えている。そんな時代とは無縁なsonic youthだが、やはりバンドサウンドでのアプローチとしては群を抜いている。今聞いても良い作品である。
