ディープパープルのcome taste the band はおれの愛聴盤。それ以来の付き合いである。来日コンサートははちとまずかったけどな。これはトミーがおのれの志向する音楽を具体化させたバンドのライブ。アナログでティーザーは持っているがライブではさらにラフなアレンジでかっこいいっすね。彼のいいところはかなりファンキーな音楽をロックに結び付けていたこと。このライブはお披露目だったらしく、バックにはブラコンでかなり有名な＝ホイットニーヒューストンの製作などで売れっ子＝ナｰラダマイケルウオルデンがドラムで参加。頭角を表していた時の彼のドラミングはかなり強力でジェフベックとセッションしていたのがなぜかがよくわかる。ドラムははじけている。そして、おすすめは９）marching powderなのである、トミーの才能が良く出ている楽曲であり、これだけを聴くのでも十分である。スリリングなインストがここで炸裂する。こんなにかっこいいのに死んでしまうなんて。生きてればコージーパウエルとヤンハマーとマーカスミラーでバンドやって欲しかったな~~。天国のトミーにこの文章を捧げます。ソウルのあるギターだよな、やっぱ。音はあんまりよくないけど、ギターがしょんべんちびりそうなくらいかっこいいから許す。

これほどまでに自分の参加するグループで、自分のカラーを出せるというのはなかなかいないのではないだろうか。私が初めてトミー・ボーリンの演奏を聞いたのはジェームズ・ギャングですが、ジェームズ・ギャングといえば名手ジョー・ウォルシュのいたバンドですが、ジョー・ウォルシュのいた頃はギター・ベース・ドラムの３人編成でちょっとクリームっぽい感じの演奏をしていました。ジェームズ・ギャングにトミー・ボーリンが加入する前にもう１人ドン・トロイアーノというギタリストがいたのですが、それはまあいいとしてトミーが加入してからのジェームズ・ギャングが全然今までとは違っていることにビックリしました。これは誰の影響なのだろうと思ったのですが、それ以降トミー・ボーリンの参加したアルバムを聞いて納得がいきました。全てトミーの影響だったわけです。例えばあのビリー・コブハムが出したアルバム「スペクトラム」にも参加していますが、ここでもトミーカラーがよく出ている作品となっています。後は皆さんご存知のディープ・パープルということになっていくわけです。人生短かったけど、かなりいろんな人に影響を与えてますよね。以上
