Album Details

Vinyl LP pressing of the 1979 album from the British drumming legend and his band Bruford. Bill recorded his debut album as a leader in 1978 but it wasn't until the conclusion of an 18-month spell with the band UK that his vision of a more permanent outfit bore fruit. Joining Bill and guitarist Allan Holdsworth in Bruford was bassist Jeff Berlin and keyboardist Dave Stewart. Key tracks on One of a Kind include 'Hell's Bells', 'Fainting In Coils' and 'Five G'. This re-issue includes a previously unreleased bonus track: 'Manacles'. Bruford. 2009.

２０年近く前初めてこのアルバムを聴いてジャズロック、カンタベリーミュージックなるものの存在を知ってから、このアルバムのような音世界を求めていろいろ聴きあさっていますが、いまだにこの「Ｏｎｅ　Ｏｆ　Ｋｉｎｄ」をこえるアルバムにめぐり合っていません。ジャズとロックの融合したような音楽ですが、一般的なフュージョンと違った品があって奥が深い独特の雰囲気はマニアックなオタクゴコロをくすぐられます。私にとっては俗世間を離れた夢の世界に連れて行ってくれる素敵なアルバムです。　ビルのたたき出す心地よい変拍子とスコーンという独特のスネア、アランホールズワースの流麗でいてうねりまくる独特のフレージングのギター、デイブスチュアートのいかにもカンタベリーというようなカラフルな彩のキーボードにブリブリ気持ちよいサウンドのジェフバーリンのテクニカルなベース。この４人の職人が奏でる音楽はこれぞブリティッシュジャズロックといえる完璧な音楽で、ただひたすらに美しく、そして奥深く、聞き込めば聞き込むほど魅了されてしまうほどの素晴らしさです。　高校生の頃、私にこの素晴らしいアルバムを薦めてくれた中古レコード店の店員のお兄さんに深く感謝いたします。本当にありがとう！。今も愛聴させてもらっています。

７４年に「レッド」で解散したクリムゾンのメンバーBill Bruford氏の自らのバンドによるアルバムです。ＵＫをアラン・ホールズワースと一緒に脱退した直後のアルバムですが、ＵＫとはかなり雰囲気の違うジャズロックを聴かせてくれます。１曲目の「ヘルズベルズ」なんてもろにカンタベリーです。（作曲者がスチュアート/ゴウエンになっています。）全員が超絶技巧の持ち主であるため、ハイレベルなインタープレーの応酬が楽しめます。構造としてはビルの作り出す複雑な変拍子の上にこのバンドのイニチアチブを握っていると思われるスチュアートのカラフルなキーボードによってサウンドの厚みを増し、その上をアランのギターとジェフのベースがソロを取っていく（ジェフのベースはリード楽器と呼んでも差し支えないでしょう）といったかんじでしょうか。アランのギターが凄いのは言うまでもなく、「Abingdon Chasp」では例のウネウネ節が炸裂します。ただこのバンドでなんと言っても一番目立っているのはジェフのベースではないでしょうか。「Travell With Myself」のソロや「Five G」の超絶チョッパーなど聴き所満載です。インタープレーの応酬を終え「The Sahara Of Snow」の感動的な終わり方には本当に溜息がでます。ハットフィールドやナショナルヘルスなどのカンタベリー系が好きな人、超絶技巧の応酬を楽しみたい人にお薦めです。

僕はYes→King Crimsonからのブラッフォード・ファンでもありますが、(特にスココン・スネアの)何といっても聴きたいのはジェフ・バーリンのベースです。渡辺香津美とのコラボ・アルバム「Spice of Life」での3人の演奏は今も心に残る名演でした。もっともっとバーリン+ブラッフォードが聴きたい。だからこのアルバムも買う。そういう感じです。ジェフ・バーリンの「Pump It!」と「Champion」の完全復刻を併せて望みます。
