フィル・マンザネラと801プロジェクト名義の１９７７年の作品です。実質的にはマンザネラのソロ・アルバムになると思います。名作「ダイアモンド・ヘッド」に続く、これまた名盤のソロ２作目です。どこかカラっとした大自然的な「ダイアモンド・ヘッド」にくらべて、本作品は重厚でスタイリッシュな都会的イメージです。今回も全ての曲が名曲、名演奏の素晴らしい出来です。
ラストの「Postcard Love」「That Falling Feeling」の2曲は感動すら覚える超名曲です。マンザネラは職人的なギタープレイヤーとして捉えられる事が多いのですが、この２曲で、そのメロデイーメイカーとしての素晴らしさを確認できます。
名曲「Diamondo Head」の流れをくむ「Island」、次回作の「K-SCOPE」の作風に繋がるポップな「Flight19」、テープ逆回転がキワモノになっていない「?Que?」、とにかくかっこいいインストゥルメンタル「Initial Speed」、重厚でオシャレな「Law and Order」、そしてこの作品を象徴するのが「Listen Now」「City of Light」の２曲で、超スタイリィッシュな名演奏です。
イーノ、ビル・マコーミック、メル・コリンズ、ゴドレー&クリーム、エディ・ジョブソン、そしてマンザネラがアルバムをプロデュースした関係でSPLIT ENZのティム・フィン、エディ・レイナーがこの作品からマンザネラファミリーに加わりました。
とにかくセンスのいい作品です。

Diamond Head が気に入った方は、是非このListen/Now もお聞きになることをお勧めします。全般的にポップな仕上がりですが、一曲一曲が変化に富み、アルバムとしての完成度もかなり高い方だと思います。そんな中、メロディアスなIslandは秀逸の出来です。

　フィル・マンザネラ等の801プロジェクト名義のアルバムとしては唯一のスタジオ録音で1977年作品。発表当時、アナログLPで購入して愛聴していたが、2008年、ディスクユニオン社から紙ジャケット仕様にてCD再発となったのを知り、さっそく購入した次第。
　このアルバムは、ロル・クレーム＆ケヴィン・ゴドリーの参加のせいもあるのか、シティ・ポップ・ロックという造りで、カンタベリー色は無く、クワイエット・サン等とはだいぶ違う。
　フィル・マンザネラは、ロキシーミュージックでも曲作りのセンスの良さには定評があったと思われるが、ここでもそのセンスは遺憾なく発揮されており、渋いリズムセクション、印象的なギターフレーズ等にのせて、サイモン・エインリー氏？のヴォーカルが実に良い。
　ちょっとひねくれたような感じのヴォーカルなのだが、それがまた魅力。ただ、プログレファンにはサウンドがポップ過ぎると見られる一方、このヴォーカルの魅力が一般ポップファンにはすっきり伝わらなかった可能性もあるだろう。
　作品はどれも印象的だが、私が特に好きなのは、4曲目「Law and order」で、私としては、職業柄？この歌詞の内容に直ちに賛同するわけにはいかないが、このシニカルでほの暗いサウンド世界は、メトロの「Criminal World」等と並ぶ英国シティポップロックの傑作と思っている。
　ぜひ多くの英国ロックファンの方に、このアルバムを手にしていただきたいと思う。
