現時点からみれば、キング・クリムゾンというバンドは活動を続けていることは周知の事実であるが、これが発表された当時は、これが最後だと思わざるを得ない完成度の高いラストアルバムであった。タコ・メーターの振り切れたジャケットとそのイメージに相当する「レッド」、叙情豊かな「フォーリン・エンゼル」、もうこれを聞けば再びは絶対にないと確信してしまう「スターレス」。スターレスの余韻に浸ってキング・クリムゾンの時代は幕を閉じたと思ったものだった。考え方によってはここで前期のキング・クリムゾンは終ったと考えることも可能であるので、事実、紛れもなく終焉の音である。ロバート・フリップは残るが、ジョン・ウエットンとビル・ブラッフォードは新しい旅へと出発することになる。

耳で聴く音が、色や味、臭いまで感じさせてくれる、そんな感覚に陥る名作です。キング・クリムゾンのアルバムは、どれも素晴らしいが、個人的には、「太陽と戦慄」とこの「RED」が最高だと思います。

特に、タイトル曲である「RED」は、取りかえしのつかない所までなし崩し的に突入していく絶望感と焦燥感が見事なまでに表現されていて、何度聴いても鳥肌が立ってしまいます。また、「STARLESS」は、鉛の底なし沼に徐々に徐々に沈んでいくような、何とも言いようのない感覚が味わえる、ダークな逸品です。

はまった人は、二度と抜け出せなくなる、クリムゾンの世界に是非、浸ってみてください。

ジャケット裏のスピード・メーターはレッド・ゾーンを振り抜けていることが全てを象徴する前期クリムゾンのラスト・アルバム。解散発表の翌日に発表された。この後、ライヴ・アルバムの『USA(永くCD化されなかったが最近CD化された)』が出ているが、これは番外だろう。これから以降のクリムゾンをキング・クリムゾンと呼ぶべきなのかは賛否両論あるところであるが、僕は『呼ばない派』である。もっと言うと『アースバウンド』も除いたこの『Red』までが真のキング・クリムゾンのアルバムであると考える『派』である。ここまでの芸術的な7枚の作品のみがキング・クリムゾンだと言い切りたい。
この段階のメンバー、ロバート・フィリップ(g)、ジョン・ウエットン(b、vo)、ビル・ブラッフォード(ds)は純化されたへヴィ・メタリックなプログレッシブ・ロックの構築の最終形態とも言うべきセンチメンタルな叙情性を徹底的に排除しきった音楽をこの『Red』で描き切ったと思える。その純化したストイックな音の結晶を見ているようなアルバムである。
元のメンバー5人も参加した最終作。ギター・フリークを自負するならこのアルバムのロバート・フィリップのギターを聴かずしてギターを語ることは不可能。それほどの作品である。
