   1974年の『Starless And Bible Black』は、ギタリストのロバート・フリップ、ベーシスト兼シンガーのジョン・ウェットン、ドラマーのビル・ブラッフォード（それにヴァイオリニストのデヴィッド・クロス）というクリムゾンの主要メンバーが顔をそろえた2枚目のアルバム。前作『Larks' Tongues in Aspic』の複雑な構造とハードなグルーヴを受け継いでおり、『Lizard』や『In the Wake of Poseidon』のようなメロトロンを多用したサイケデリック・シンフォニーとは一線を画すサウンドだ。

   金字塔的なアルバム『Red』を予告していたかのような本作には、「The Great Deceiver」、エキセントリックなバラード「Lament」、戦慄的な演奏が11分間にわたって展開する「Fracture」、壮大なタイトル・トラックなど、クリムゾンの代表曲といえるトラックが並ぶ。アヴァン・ロック調の「Bolero」は、アブストラクトなノイズ・ギター、けたたましいパーカッション、厚みのあるファンク・ベース・ラインによる不協和音の饗宴だ。メロトロンも登場するが、ここでは不調和なハーモニーと不気味なサウンドの爆発を手助けするかたちとなっている。クリムゾン・マニアのマスト・アイテムであり、初心者が最初に聴くべき1枚としてもおすすめだ。（James Rotondi, Amazon.com）

The second Crimson album to feature the core lineup of guitarist Robert Fripp, bassist-singer John Wetton, and drummer Bill Bruford (plus violinist David Cross), 1974's Starless continues the complex structures and hard-edged grooves of Larks' Tongues in Aspic. It's a sound that's firmly departed from the mellotron-assisted psychedelic symphony approach of Lizard and In the Wake of Poseidon. The precursor to the landmark Red, Starless includes such Crimson classics as "The Great Deceiver," the eccentric ballad "Lament," the menacing 11-minute "Fracture," and the sprawling title track, an avant-rock "Bolero" that builds into a cacophony of abstract noise guitar, chattering percussion, fleshy funk bass lines and, yep, mellotron, this time in the service of dissonant harmonies and spooky sound bursts. 「Starless and Bible Black」最初に聞いたのが32年前。静と動。創造と破壊。光と闇。愛と不安。矛盾した事象が同時に存在する本質的な世界。音楽で表現すること自体が矛盾ではないのか？それを実現した実在としてKing Crimsonが在る。30年以上も経って色あせない音楽などそう存在しない。10代の皆様、一度体験してみては？おじさんからの提案です。（2009）

1974年発表。キング・クリムゾンの6枚目の作品(僕の中では『アースバウンド』をいれられません)。このアルバム・タイトル『Starless and Bible Black(星一つ無い聖なる暗黒)』はデビュー作の中の『エビタフ』の『Confusion will be my epitaph(混迷が僕の墓碑銘)』と同レベルで心に突き刺さる僕のクリムゾンに対するイメージそのものだ。R.P.ジェイムスの詩世界はジョン・ウェットンの男性的なボーカルでストイックな漆黒の美世界をここに完成した。
屈強なリズム・セクションとハードなギター・リフを全面に押し出したへヴィ・メタリックなプログレッシブ・ロックは他に比べうるものすらなく、これからも生まれようも無く、その崇高な音世界の完成の奇蹟に『this night wounds time』だ。
『The Great Deceiver』のギター・リフと『Cigarettes, ice cream,figurines of the Virgin Mary』のフレーズはロック・ファンの魂でリフレインし続けている。

１９７４年リリースのなかなかハードなアルバム・・・テクニックに裏打ちされたインストに比重を置いた内容です。とにかく当時のエネルギーがそのまま伝わって来ます！！驚いた事にボーカル入り以外はすべてライブレコーディングらしいとの事・・・信じられません！！メンバーは、ロバートフリップ・デヴィッドクロス・ジョンウェットン・ビルブルフォードの強力ラインナップです。アナログＢ面を使用した「スターレスアンドバイブルブラック」~「フラクチャー」は即興性が如実にあらわれています・・・このアルバムを聴きながら何かするなんて不可能！！凄まじいエネルギーを秘めた破壊力満点のアルバム！！
