   チャーリー・ヘイデンが注目されたのは、1950年代末にオーネット・コールマンのグループに参加してから。ヘイデンは単にベースを弾くだけでなく、トータル・ミュージシャンとして幅広い活動を行なってきた。そのひとつがリベレーション・ミュージック・オーケストラの主宰。ミュージシャンたちの善意に支えられたこのオーケストラは、結成以来30年以上経過して、発表したアルバムはたった4枚だけ。数は少ないが、いずれも深い感動を呼ぶ名作ぞろいだ。
   これは1969年に録音した同オーケストラの第1作。ドン・チェリー、マイク・マントラー、ガトー・バルビエリ、デューイ・レッドマン、ラズウェル・ラッドなど参加メンバーはJCOA派が中心、アレンジ面はカーラ・ブレイが全面的に協力している。スペイン市民戦争をテーマにしたドラマティックかつ叙情的な演奏が美しく、そして感動的だ。扱っているテーマは深刻だが、音楽的に昇華されているので、テーマに興味がなくても抵抗なく聴けるはず。（市川正二）

Hadenのメッセージが込められた絵画的な音楽である。戦争、殺戮、人種差別、貧困、搾取といった世の中の脅威に打ちのめされ、ひしがれた市民の心情を、音楽的に表現する。このアルバムの契機になったスペインの市民戦争を題材にした音楽を聴いていると、ピカソの描いた『ゲルニカ』を思い起こすのだ。ムンクの『叫び』も同様にイメージする。

アルバム全体にノスタルジックで、哀しい雰囲気を持ち、心情をあらわす。バックにスペインの古い民謡が流れる。前面には、切り裂かれるような管楽器の鋭い響き。歴史の中で翻弄され、切り裂かれる思いの市民の心情を表すようで、胸に迫る。心に迫るアルバムである。

フリージャズ集団JCOAの人脈を活かして、人選が行われた。純粋にジャズの音楽としても素晴らしい内容で、音に魅かれる。だからメッセージ性が強くても、しつこくならない。心に迫る音楽を何回も聴きたいと思うくらいだ。発売当時（1969年）、圧倒的な支持を集めたというが、今でも価値は下がっていない。歴史に埋もれさせたくないアルバムだ。
